Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Spark Met Gala Outrage as Guerrilla Protest Takes Over NYC Subways

The Met Gala is usually known for high fashion, jaw-dropping red carpet reveals, and the biggest names in Hollywood. But this year, the “party of the year” is making headlines for a much more controversial reason. As the May event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art draws near, the internet is buzzing with a growing backlash against Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez.

The drama began when it was revealed that the billionaire couple would serve as honorary chairs for the gala, which carries the theme “fashion is art.” While the event is expected to feature A-listers like Beyonce and Rihanna, many fans are feeling less than celebratory about the men behind the money.

Outrage Hits the NYC Subways

What started as quiet “online grumblings” has officially exploded into a full-blown protest movement. This week, NYC commuters were greeted by guerrilla-style art displays plastered across subway stations. These DIY posters, created by the U.K.-based protest collective Everyone Hates Elon, take direct aim at the Amazon mogul’s involvement in the prestigious event.

The posters have quickly gone viral on Instagram, with users sharing photos of the “spoof ads” that criticize Amazon’s warehouse labor practices and its reported ties to immigration enforcement. One caption circulating on Instagram reads: “Billionaire Trump supporter Jeff Bezos is chairing the Met Gala, celebrities’ biggest night. His company literally helps ICE. WTF @metmuseum?”

The social media movement is urging the public not to let the “glamour” of the night mask the reality of how that wealth was built. “Don’t let him hide behind the glamour while the world burns,” another viral post stated, offering followers free stickers to join the campaign.

Anna Wintour Steps In

The controversy has become so loud that even Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour attempted to calm the storm. During an appearance on CNN, Wintour tried to shift the focus back to the fashion, but her comments seemed to only add fuel to the fire for some critics.

“Lauren Sanchez is a great lover of costume and, obviously, of fashion,” Wintour said during the interview. She also expressed her appreciation for the couple’s financial support, adding, “We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity.”

Despite Wintour’s defense, online sleuths remain disillusioned. Many argue that one of the world’s wealthiest men is effectively “buying his way” into a major cultural event at a public institution. The fact that organizers conspicuously omitted the couple’s name when first unveiling the guest list only deepened the suspicion of savvy readers who were quick to connect the dots.

A Night of High Stakes

When the red carpet finally rolls out, Bezos and Sanchez are expected to join Wintour atop the famous museum steps to greet arriving guests. While the paparazzi will be focused on the “fashion is art” theme, the eyes of the digital world will likely be on the protesters outside.

The juxtaposition of extreme wealth and grassroots activism has turned this year’s gala into a lightning rod for social commentary on TikTok and X. Many users are questioning the ethics of celebrity culture and the influence of “primary backers” on public institutions.

As of Friday afternoon, representatives for Bezos had not returned requests for comment regarding the growing protests. Whether the outrage will overshadow the couture remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Met Gala is already the most talked-about event of the season for all the wrong reasons.
