Goonies 2 Gets Exciting Update From Ke Huy Quan as Steven Spielberg Joins Team

By John Brown 11/16/2025

40 years later, The Goonies finally confirmed a much-needed sequel, and now, actor Ke Huy Quan is here with an exciting update. Talking to ComicBook about his upcoming film, Zootopia 2, Quan revealed that a second draft of the script has been turned in.

This comes after it was announced that Steven Spielberg will be joining the sequel as a producer, along with Chris Columbus, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario.

Quan said,

I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it. This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it.

He also remembered telling his Zootopia co-star, Fortune Feimster, about it, adding that he wants her to be in it. Teenage Quan played the role of Richard “Data” Wang in the 1985 classic.

Quan is looking forward to the sequel. He stated, “I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.” Well, another adventure awaits!

The Goonies 2 Is Moving in the Right Direction

Best known for his work on Greedy People and Motor City, Potsy Ponciroli has been called in to pen the script for a Goonies sequel, and as far as he is concerned, things are moving in the right direction.

During a panel at the Venice Film Festival in August, Ponciroli revealed that his first draft of the sequel was “very well received.” Back then, he also stated that the second draft was 95% done.

Ponciroli said (via Deadline),

I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft and I’m about 95% done with that so we’re moving in the right direction.

Thanks to Quan, we know that the second draft has also been submitted. It’s only a matter of time before things start to get serious! While many are excited to revisit their childhood with The Goonies 2, others are not convinced that a sequel is necessary.

However, Ponciroli understands the fans’ trepidation and promises to do the best he can with the sequel. He said, “I know there’s a lot of, ‘Do we need a new Goonies, but I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favorite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me it was a story that never ended so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.”

So far, it looks like the film is in good hands.

What We Know About The Goonies 2 So Far

The Goonies sequel was confirmed to be in the works on February 14, 2025, with Spielberg and Columbus directing (via Deadline). So far, not much is known about the sequel since a script is still in development.

The film is clearly in the early stages of development, which is why almost nothing has been confirmed yet, including the release date and the cast. Of course, it seems rather apparent that Quan would be joining the ensemble.

Moreover, Corey Feldman, who played the role of Clark “Mouth” Devereaux, once stated that he and Josh Brolin would be game, too. He recalled (via Variety), “Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.” Brolin played the role of Brandon “Brand” Walsh.

In fact, Feldman and Sean Astin (Michael “Mikey” Walsh) even came close to a sequel a decade ago, pitching the idea to OG director Richard Donner. He stated that it was a “great idea” and something they had “worked really hard on.” However, while Donner was excited by the idea, it was “too expensive” to bring to life. Donner passed away on July 05, 2021.

As for the plot, Feldman recalled Donner stating how he wanted to make the sequel small instead of going all in. In the late director’s words, as recalled by the actor, “I want to make it small. I want to make it about the characters — more of a film about these people and where they are now.”

For now, we cannot say if this is where the sequel is headed, but it seems like the most obvious option. No director is attached to the film yet. Donner’s ex-wife, Lauren Shuler Donner, will be serving as an executive producer, while Spielberg, Columbus, Krieger, and Bario are producing.
