The Schwartz is officially back, and it’s bigger than ever!
Comedy legend Mel Brooks sent shockwaves through CinemaCon on Wednesday night when he beamed in via video to drop the news fans have been waiting nearly years to hear. While we all joked for decades about a sequel titled The Search for More Money, Mel has settled on something a bit more… “fresh.”
The official title for the follow-up to the cult classic is officially: Spaceballs: The New One.
The announcement has already sparked a firestorm on X (formerly Twitter), with fans celebrating the return of one of the most beloved parodies in cinematic history. “I’ve waited my entire life for this,” one fan tweeted. “Mel Brooks is and still out-trolling everyone. Legend.”
But the title wasn’t the only thing Mel brought to the party. Amazon MGM Studios debuted the very first footage from the film, and it sounds just as chaotic as you’d expect.
The footage opened with a narrator cheekily admitting that while the team “can’t show you much,” they could provide a “series of clips that make little sense out of context.”
The highlight of the reel? A moment that is already destined for viral fame. The footage reportedly showed a character appearing to be a Na’vi from Avatar standing at a urinal next to the legendary Rick Moranis.
In a hilarious nod to James Cameron’s franchise, Moranis looks up at his much taller neighbor and deadpans, “I see you,” in the Na’vi language.
Speaking of Moranis, fans are rejoicing that the comedy icon is officially back as Dark Helmet. He’ll be joined by original cast members George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and, of course, Mel Brooks himself.
The sequel is also keeping it in the family. Lewis Pullman, who starred in Top Gun: Maverick, has joined the cast. While roles are officially under wraps, word on the street is that Lewis will be playing the son of his father’s iconic character, Lone Starr.
Joining the “New One” are comedy heavyweights Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Barry star Anthony Carrigan. Gad, who is also producing and co-writing the script, has been teasing this project for a while.
Back in , Gad took to Instagram to share his excitement after finishing the script. “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited,” he captioned the post at the time.
He also shared that working with co-writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez has been “heaven on Earth and many other planets as well.”
Spaceballs: The New One is being directed by Josh Greenbaum, with a heavy-hitting production team including Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.
While we still have a bit of a wait before we can jump to ludicrous speed—the film is set for an April , release—the hype is already astronomical.
On TikTok, fans are already theorizing which modern sci-fi franchises are next on Mel’s parody hit list. From Dune to Marvel, no one is safe from the Schwartz.
As we wait for more updates from the set, one thing is for sure: Mel Brooks is ready to make the galaxy hilarious again. After all, “The New One” might just be the “Best One.”
