Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West Get Real About ‘Messy’ Friendships and That Epic ‘Big Mood’ Season Celebrity Cameo: ‘It Was a Dream’

Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West are officially back, and they are ready to get messy.

The stars of the hit dark comedy Big Mood are returning for a second season, and according to the duo, things are about to get a whole lot more complicated for our favorite East London besties, Maggie and Eddie. Fans are already buzzing on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok about the return of the series, which perfectly balances gut-punching sincerity with laugh-out-loud absurdity.

In an exclusive catch-up, the Bridgerton star and West revealed that Season —which drops Thursday, April on Tubi in the U.S.—features a major shift in the dynamic. After a year of radio silence following Eddie’s impulsive move to L.A., the pair reunites as bridesmaids at a wedding, but the vibe is anything but “happily ever after.”

“It’s a bit of a role reversal in this series,” Coughlan tells us. While her character Maggie struggled with bipolar disorder in Season , she’s now trying to be the “stable” one. Think: yoga, Pelotons, and vitamins. Meanwhile, Eddie is the one quietly spiraling.

“Maggie’s trying really hard to be the stable one,” Coughlan explains. “And Eddie’s the one going through a crisis — not that she really realizes it.”

The drama hits a fever pitch with the arrival of a new antagonist: Whitney (played by Hannah Onslow), a “hippie, spiritual guru-TikTok influencer” who Eddie brings back from L.A. Fans of the show are already prepared to hate-watch the intruder, and Coughlan admits that Maggie feels the same way.

“Maggie doesn’t really like anyone aside from Eddie, not truly,” Coughlan says of the codependent friendship. “So to have someone come in and take your person away, it’s very painful.”

But the talk of the town isn’t just the drama—it’s the guest stars. The duo couldn’t stop gushing about filming with the legendary Rupert Everett. West, who had worked with him before, shared a hilarious story about how the cameo came to be.

“He messaged me saying, ‘Darling, are you in a Bad Mood?’” West laughs, recalling his confusion over the show’s title. Once he got the name right, he was all in.

“It was a dream,” Coughlan adds. “It’s such a good trait when someone’s not afraid to take the complete piss out of themselves. And he just really went for that. I adored working with him.”

Beyond the laughs and the celebrity sightings, the show continues to win hearts for its raw portrayal of bipolar disorder. Coughlan notes that while depression and anxiety are more “societally acceptable” to talk about now, there is still a massive misunderstanding of bipolar disorder.

“It’s an incredibly tricky disorder… incredibly difficult to medicate,” she says. “I think it’s great that it deals with it through the lens of comedy, because then it doesn’t feel like we’re trying to hammer home a lesson.”

The feedback from the community has been overwhelming, with many calling it the most realistic depiction of the condition ever seen on TV.

As for a potential Season ? While nothing is confirmed, the stars say they’d jump at the chance to work together again. “One of the nicest things about the show is that we’ve all become genuine friends,” Coughlan shares.

Big Mood Season is available to stream now on Tubi. Grab your vitamins and your emotional support bestie—it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
