Elizabeth Olsen Cozies Up to Marvel for Scarlet Witch After Public Criticism

By Andrew Martin 10/21/2025

It’s been 11 years since Elizabeth Olsen stepped into the MCU. Her role as Wanda Maximoff has evolved over a decade to become the Scarlet Witch, and a single movie has seen her demoted from a tragically selfless Avenger to an unhinged, multiversal villain whose redemption was found only in death.

Between 2014 and 2025, Olsen’s character was not the only one going through an odyssey of emotional highs and lows. The actor herself was at odds with Marvel on more than one occasion, criticizing the studio’s long contracts and her inability to pursue independent films.

However, a recent interview suggests the actress has seemingly shed her animosity toward Marvel and is on board with getting back into her spandex.

Elizabeth Olsen Opens Up About Scarlet Witch’s MCU Fate

In 2022, Elizabeth Olsen expressed some confusion over the sudden evil turn of her character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It was an opinion shared by many regarding an arc that was so carefully and poignantly fleshed out over the span of the Infinity Saga and its aftermath in WandaVision.

At the time, Olsen defended her character’s actions and ending in an interview with Hollywood Life, claiming she was “satisfied” with how her arc turned out – as in dead in the rubble with no means of return: “I think somehow it needed to end where it ends at some point.”

3 years later, she has now revealed to InStyle magazine:

It’s [making MCU movies] ridiculous. We’re grown people behaving like children on a playground. We’re flying. We’re shooting things out of our hands. And it’s a character that I’ve gotten to return to so many times over 10 years. It’s good to put her down and then I miss her and I want her back. I’d jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again.

Nevertheless, it will definitely be interesting to see where Marvel takes Olsen in the ever-evolving arc of the Scarlet Witch after Doctor Strange 2, which ended with the collapse of Wundagore.

Elizabeth Olsen Retracts Her Criticism Against Marvel

Earlier this year, in April 2025, Elizabeth Olsen was somewhat dismissive of her work in the franchise, claiming she had to prove she had good taste after working in Marvel for so long.

In the NPR podcast, Wild Card with Rachel Martin, Olsen revealed:

Because I have spent so many years doing Marvel that I feel like all the other jobs I have to do have to really reflect my personal taste because as much as I love being a part of this world — and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do with the character — it’s not really the art that I consume.

Despite garnering an Emmy nomination for her work in WandaVision, Olsen has found her MCU experience to be quite hollow, considering her roots in indie arthouse cinema.

Now, after her recent interview with InStyle, the actress might be going into damage control mode by cozying up to Marvel as the franchise makes big plans beyond Phase 6 centered around the X-Men, of which Scarlet Witch could be a pivotal part.
