In a recent interview with People, their elected Sexiest Man Alive, Jonathan Bailey, opened up about being a part of the recently released Wicked: For Good. And seeing its success, he was asked about whether there was a plan for a third film in the series. He said:
I have no idea. I mean, the world is so incredible. Who knows? I mean, all the characters have potential…
Here, the potential that’s being discussed is in relation to the source material, where his and co-star Cynthia Erivo‘s characters have children. And with the success of the series, along with recent reports, it seems like there is a chance for a third film in the future.
Wicked 3 Is Allegedly in the Works at Universal Pictures

With the unexpected opening day box office collection of $68.6 million, Wicked: For Good has broken yet another record. Therefore, when rumblings of a new film in the franchise are circulating, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched to be true.
According to insider reports from @MyTimeToShineH, there have been proceedings at Universal Pictures of a new project from the franchise, which is currently being called Wicked 3. The insider wrote:
Even though Wicked: For Good covers the rest of the musical, there are talks about a possible third movie.
This news comes after the filmmaker of the recent movie, Jon M. Chu, once talked about the possibility of a third film being made. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Chu claimed that a new film in the Wicked franchise will depend on the reception and demand of the fandom for another addition to the story.
And judging by the trajectory that the recent release is heading towards, Wicked 3 might just happen.
How Ariana Grande Might Not Return for a New Wicked Project

Apart from the alleged Wicked 3, the series’ music composer, Stephen Schwartz, revealed how he has some idea for a continuation/exploration of the land of Oz.
In an interview with The Ankler, he revealed that author Winnie Holzman and he were thinking of a spin-off series of the universe, which will not be a direct connection to the two-part film in any manner. He also hinted that if this comes to fruition, then Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will not return as their respective characters. He said:
What I will tell you without giving away too much is that Winnie Holzman and I are doing some work right now on ideas that aren’t a sequel to Wicked, because I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete — but there are other aspects that could be explored.
Therefore, with a Wicked 3 possibly being in the works as well as a spin-off, the Wicked universe may be taking shape right in front of our eyes.
