Tom Cruise Reacts to Winning First Ever Oscar: “I will do everything I can for this art form”

Tom Cruise finally has an Oscar in his hands. Yes, an actual Academy Award thanks to the Honorary Oscar he received at the Nov. 16, 2025, Governors Awards. And in true Cruise fashion, he didn’t just accept it; he delivered a promise big enough to match his action-hero reputation. He said (via X),

I want you to know that I will do everything I can for this art form, to support and champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful. And hopefully, without too many more broken bones.

Even after decades of running faster than physics should allow, dangling off cliffs, and saving blockbusters from extinction, this was Cruise’s first time holding an Oscar with his name on it. And he treated the moment with the kind of warmth that showed exactly why Hollywood still sees him as its last true movie star.

Tom Cruise Celebrates His Win by Honoring the People and Passion Behind Cinema

Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who’s directing Cruise in an upcoming 2026 film, handed him the award. And Cruise melted everyone with his speech. He went straight for the heart. He said (via Variety),

The cinema, it takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways.

This type of sentiment can only be expressed by someone who has spent his entire existence inside dark theaters, on chaotic sets, and strapped to questionable stunt rigs. Cruise spoke about how movies bring strangers together. He also spoke about how they make people laugh and ache and hope at the exact same time, regardless of where they come from. He added,

And that is the power of this art form. That is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.

It wasn’t a speech designed to go viral. It was just honest. Impressively honest for a man who has spent half his life outrunning explosions.

This Honor Was Waiting for Tom Cruise All Along

Cruise has been playing so many unforgettable characters for years now. It almost feels unfair that he hasn’t already picked up an Oscar. He came close to winning four times, though. But he did not take the golden statue home.

There are also all the roles that the Academy somehow blinked and missed. In Rain Man, he carried the film’s full emotional load. In A Few Good Men, he stood toe-to-toe with Jack Nicholson. And his Eyes Wide Shut is still being debated by film nerds as if it had premiered yesterday.

So, yeah, Cruise has been giving award-level performances for decades, with or without the Academy’s stamp. So this Honorary Oscar doesn’t feel like a “thanks for trying” trophy. It feels like Hollywood finally admitted that they should have done this a long time ago.

And honestly, he earned it! This is not just because he’s been glued to airplanes and sprinting across continents for our entertainment. But because he genuinely loves movies. At the age of 63, he still talks about cinema like a kid who snuck onto a film set and never left.

Cruise didn’t need an Oscar to prove anything. His career already did that. But now that he finally has one, it almost clicks into place.
