TikTok star Brooke Schofield is currently facing a whirlwind of controversy after old racist tweets of hers resurfaced, leading to a tearful apology. In a nearly four-minute video posted on her social media, the influencer was visibly emotional as she took full responsibility for her past mistakes, which have reignited a firestorm of backlash.
Brooke’s Tweets From 2012 To 2015 Have Gone Viral
The 27-year-old social media star, known for her engaging content and energetic personality, has been an internet sensation with over 2 million followers on TikTok. She's also recognized for hosting the podcast Canceled with Tana Mongeau, where she discusses celebrity scandals and pop culture. Despite her thriving online presence, Schofield’s recent apology is a stark reminder of how quickly public perception can shift.
The controversy began when Brooke’s followers discovered and highlighted her old tweets from 2012 to 2015. These tweets included offensive comments, such as her defense of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case and racially insensitive remarks about "ratchet hair" and using racist slurs.
Fans didn’t shy away from expressing their disappointment, calling out the posts as “irritating” and “disappointing.”
Brooke Posted A Tearful Apology For Her Followers
In her tearful video, Schofield admitted, “You have probably seen the tweets that have been floating around. They are not fake. Those are real things that I said.”
She continued, “I want to acknowledge that I feel the same way about them that you do. I think they are so disturbing. They're wrong. They're horrible and they're disgusting.” Throughout the emotional response, she struggled to maintain her composure, frequently sniffing and tearing up throughout her apology.
Schofield’s attempt to address her past comes after a surge of comments from her followers criticizing her for not practicing the accountability she preaches.
One fan commented, “People are allowed to be hurt by her words, especially those it was targeted at. It's not a non-POC's place to forgive her and defend her 'growth.' People can be hurt,” to which Schofield responded with a somber acknowledgment of the hurt caused.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Schofield shared that she was adopted by her grandparents at age 10, and their views significantly impacted her early perspectives. She confessed that the offensive tweets were posted when she was 18, and it wasn't until after college that her outlook began to evolve.
“There are people in my life, who I might've looked up to forever, who I do not agree with,” she said. “I'm very very sorry to anyone who is hurt by the tweets because, obviously, they are very hurtful.”
The apology video also revealed Schofield’s regret over not addressing the issue sooner. “I was getting these messages from people who were hurt by them and I felt like by bringing more attention to it, I'd be hurting more people. That was not the right mindset. I should've said something sooner,” she admitted.
As Brooke grapples with the fallout from her past tweets, her career hangs in the balance. Only time will tell if her sincere apology and efforts to address her past mistakes will be enough to restore her public image and rebuild her brand.
