As we reach closer to the highly anticipated conclusion of the iconic Stranger Things series with Season 5’s release, many fans are dreading the deaths of many characters, including Sadie Sink’s portrayal of Max. And in a recent interview with Variety, she may have hinted at it, saying:
They did a really good job of giving us all the ending that we wanted and that the show really deserved. And I think that’s so important when dealing with something as special as the show was for all of us, when it’s a decade of our lives. It was important to give it the proper closure it deserved, and I think we all definitely got that.
And with The Duffer Brothers’ past track record of doing right by every character in the Netflix series, it seems like there’s still a chance that Max survives the ordeals of Season 5. But then again, there are already a lot of clues that suggest the opposite of fans’ expectations.
Max’s Death in Stranger Things Season 5 Clues Decoded
The first, and perhaps the biggest indicator of Max’s tragic fate in Stranger Things Season 5 comes from the fact that the script of Season 4 had clearly stated the character would die. In an interview with Deadline, Sink reveals how The Duffer Brothers told her the character’s fate. She said:
They’ve been very secretive about season five in general. We did have a conversation. They called me before I read the ninth episode because in the script it literally says that Max dies. So they called me beforehand and were like, ‘just warning you, this is in there, so you’re not like truly shocked.’ I have no idea what’s coming in five and what that looks like. Max’s storyline is very up in the air, ’cause obviously she’s in a coma and Eleven can’t find her in the void. So who knows where she is and what state she’s in.
But thanks to the last-minute changes, Max is kept alive, although in a comatose state, where she will make her appearance. While Matt Duffer confirmed that Max will play an important role in Season 5, they were reluctant to detail how it would happen (via Variety).
Still, when looking at her fate after Season 4, along with Venca’s influence still lingering, she may eventually be killed by his hand after she fulfills her purpose. And even if she does manage to defeat the enemy, her physical condition might be what leads to her demise.
But there’s always hope for a miracle to happen in the series, although, as we have seen with her death being planned in Season 4, it might be highly unlikely.
Stranger Things Season 5 Will Make or Break the Legacy of the Series
As stated by Sink, as well as Joe Keery, about Steve being given a proper and satisfactory ending, it’s most likely that the creators will be doing right by the story and the rest of the cast. This will be one of the hardest things to accomplish for the show, seeing as it’s been creating a legacy for more than a decade now.
One of the hardest things for a TV series of this size and reputation to do is to provide that closure to the long-time fans, and looking at its track record, they have mostly managed to nail all the aspects of the story. Then again, all it takes is one bad move to bring it all crumbling down.
And since the show is extremely character-driven, it will be up to that closure that the fans will receive to satisfy them, or else that decade-long build-up will be for nothing.
