In her 2022 documentary film, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, the singer opened up about what it was like finally getting ready to tell her story and the two people she first called to do so.
Selena Gomez‘s breakup with Justin Bieber is one of those pop culture moments you just can’t leave in the past. She broke the Internet when she came out with Lose You to Love Me, a song about rebirth and discovering oneself. It’s widely believed that the song is about her and Bieber’s breakup.
She recalled in the documentary, “I text Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter and said, ‘I think I’m ready to just say I’m sad.” Michaels and Tranter were the co-writers of Lose You to Love Me. Gomez added, “We wrote the song in 45 minutes. The fastest song I’ve ever written” (via Billboard).
Those 45 minutes were probably filled with emotions that just kept pouring out of Gomez, because even today, Lose You to Love Me remains the anthem of healing.
Selena Gomez Talks about Losing Her Narrative and Feeling Alone

Breakups are never easy, especially when there are cameras around you, constantly recording your every move. Talking to Amy Schumer for Interview Magazine, Gomez admitted, “When I wrote the song, I was basically saying that I needed to hit rock bottom to understand that there was this huge veil over my face.”
Eventually, she had to take hold of the narrative when things got out of hand. The way things were being portrayed in the media couldn’t have been further from the truth, and Gomez was not going to have any of it.
From deleting her Instagram to reactivating it and sharing her personal life, Gomez told Schumer,
So when things kind of happened that way, it got out of control… ‘Wait, none of this is true.’ The way the media has sometimes tried to explain things has made it sound really bad, when in reality there’s nothing wrong with the fact that I needed to go away or that I fell in love. I had to start opening up because people were taking away my narrative and it was killing me. I’m so young and I’m going to keep changing, and no one has the right to tell me how my life’s going.
While appearing on the Table Manners podcast, Gomez opened up about her relationship with her now-husband, Benny Blanco, and their first kiss. She said, “So some kisses are for fun, and then when you feel something behind a kiss, it’s completely different. And I’d been alone for about five years, with the exception of a few sh*tty dates here and there, but never felt that way.”
Blanco and Gomez began dating in 2023, about five years after her split from Bieber in 2018.
Why Selena Gomez’s Breakup Was the Best Thing to Happen to Her

The breakup sure hurt, but it ultimately began the best thing that’s ever happened to Gomez. Why? Because she needed to go through that pain to grow. In the My Mind & Me documentary, Gomez confessed,
“I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing.” However, everything happens for a reason, and Gomez eventually understood the age-old saying.
She added,
But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
After her breakup with Bieber, Gomez was linked with a few men, including Drew Taggart and Andrea Iervolino. However, she finally found her one true love in Blanco. She went on to call him the “best thing that’s ever happened” to her and the best out of the lot she’s dated.

The two tied the knot in a beautiful, star-studded wedding on September 27, surrounded by their loved ones. All’s well that ends well! Gomez is living proof that you don’t necessarily have to get it right in the first few tries!
