Salma Hayek Pinault made a surprise appearance at the Max Showcase in London this evening to talk Like Water For Chocolate and reveal it has been picked up for a second season.
Appearing alongside Max Lat Am boss Mariano Cesar, the actor-producer unveiled the news and confirmed it will not go beyond Season 3. “We don’t want to do more than two we want this to be very special,” she said.
The show, which launched last month, follows star-crossed lovers Tita and Pedro, whose romance is thwarted by her family’s traditions, forcing Tita to navigate magic and flavors in the kitchen as she fights for love and embraces her destined path. The original movie came out more than 30 years ago.
Hayek Pinault joked that it has “all the flavors of Jane Austen but is a lot spicier,” which she described as the “perfect format to make into a series.”
Hayek Pinault said the show will give people a new feel for Mexican cuisine. “Mexican cuisine is known all over the world but a lot of people think in very stereotypical way our cuisine is very very rich. But it’s very sophisticated it’s not just tacos.”
She said the show is about “traditions and rituals,” some we “don’t do anymore, some we need to cut by the head but we shouldn’t lose all of them.”
Diane Kruger on ‘The Seduction’
She was appearing with HBO boss Casey Bloys, who is in London touting local programing, along with Diane Kruger, who was promoting The Seduction.
Kruger said she wants the remake of the Stephen Frears movie to give a “sense of the female gaze,” which is why it’s a good time for the show to come out. She was joined by Max French boss Vera Peltekian.
“It’s an exciting time with Max launching in France recently,” said Kruger. “There’s a lot to be done so this is as good as if not better than anything I’ve done on screen.”
