Prime Video Bags Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman’s Intense Civil War Saga

Prime Video has officially acquired The Gray House, an upcoming Civil War drama produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, according to Deadline. Originally announced in 2022, the show features an ensemble cast led by Mary-Louise Parker.

The Gray House brings to life the remarkable true story of a secret network of women who operated as spies, altering the course of American history. It is expected to premiere on Prime Video in early 2026.

Based on true events, The Gray House tells the story of a group of female spies who operated during the American Civil War, playing a pivotal role in shaping the course of history.

The group included a Virginia socialite, her mother, a formerly enslaved sister-in-arms, and the city’s most notorious courtesan. Working from within the heart of Confederate power, they turn an underground railroad into a powerful espionage network, risking their lives and freedom to fight for justice and change.

“The Gray House is an untold true story of three amazingly brave abolitionist heroes of the Civil War, who just happened to be women,” Kevin Costner told Deadline in 2022. He also shared that he is delighted to bring to life such rich and layered stories that celebrate America’s unsung heroes through this epic historical saga.

With Prime Video now on board, the streaming giant has released the first poster featuring Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Paul Anderson, and Amethyst Davis in leading roles.

Everything We Know About The Gray House

The Gray House is the upcoming Prime Video historical drama, focusing on “the three women whom General Ulysses S. Grant credited as helping the North win the Civil War.”

Costner and Morgan Freeman, who previously shared the screen in the 1991 action-adventure Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, have joined the series as executive producers.



The eight-part series is directed by Roland Joffé, based on an original script by Leslie Greif and Darrell Fetty, and Oscar-nominated John Sayles. It stars Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Paul Anderson, and Amethyst Davis. The Gray House premiered as the Opening Night selection at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in June 2024.

The ensemble cast of the series also features Hannah James, Ian Duff, Christopher McDonald, Robert Knepper, Colin Morgan, Colin O’Donoghue, Rob Morrow, Ewan Miller, Sam Trammell, and Keith David.

Prior to Prime Video acquiring distribution rights to the miniseries, reports emerged earlier this year suggesting that the producers were preparing a major announcement related to the series for the summer.

Writer and executive producer Leslie Greif has revealed that the show will feature an original song performed by Willie Nelson, along with additional tracks by Shania Twain, Killer Mike, and Yolanda Adams, among others. Jon Bon Jovi also co-wrote one of the songs on the soundtrack.
