Katy Perry playfully responded to the intense reactions to her new haircut as she sported a fresh style for American Idol.
On Tuesday, the 39-year-old singer posted a video on Instagram showing her hairstylist cutting her black hair into a choppy bob, a dramatic change from her usual long, straight locks that she had at the Oscar de la Renta fashion show just a week earlier.
Her followers didn’t hesitate to share their thoughts after she asked them, “Thoughts, comments, concerns?” However, she later revealed that the new look was actually a wig. Some fans reacted with negаtive comments, such as “I don’t like your short hair at all” and “Girl, what are you doing?” Others were more supportive, saying, “You look amazing, mumma,” and “Katy has been giving us everything with these looks.”
Perry also posted a series of backstage photos on Instagram showcasing her new hairstyle. In these pictures, she looked glamorous in a glittering black blazer minidress, accessorized with silver earrings and heels, while enjoying a can of Coca-Cola. She told her fans, “You guys had a lot of strong feelings about my haircut. Let’s save that energy because this is just a wig.”
During the American Idol episode, Katy was moved to tears by a performance from Emmy Russell, Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, who sang her grandmother’s iconic song “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Katy explained her emotional reaction, stating, “I chose this song not because Loretta Lynn is your grandma, but because you are Emmy Russell, and you can do anything now as Emmy Russell!”
Emmy, from Nashville, ended the episode with her heartfelt rendition, bringing tears to the judges and her own family. “I’m a granddaughter singing this to her grandmother,” she said. “I’m Emmy Russell. I’m 24 years old and proud to be a coal miner’s great-granddaughter.”
The episode concluded with Ryan Seacrest announcing that Kaibrienne and McKenna were in the bottom two, with one facing elimination. As the song contest winner, Katy had the power to save one contestant, and after consulting with the other judges, she chose McKenna to advance to the Top Seven, sending Kaibrienne home.
American Idol returns on Sunday with an Adele Night episode on ABC.
