Jennifer Grey reveals heartbreaking reason for not returning to Friends

Jennifer Grey has opened up on her time on iconic sitcom Friends.

The actress, 63, was one of the show's first characters in the first season, starring as Rachel Green's ( Jennifer Aniston ) best pal Mindy.

Her character ended up marrying Barry, who was Rachel's ex fiance who left her jilted at the alter.

Unfortunately for Grey, she only featured in the role once before the role was recast with Jana Marie due to her "bad anxiety".

The Dirty Dancing star admits she was a "fan of the show" when she was offered the exciting role but changes to the scene and her lines caused her "performance anxiety".

Speaking to MediaVillage, she said: "When I did it, I had such bad anxiety because they kept changing the script. It’s very hard to be a guest star because you’re not a part of it, and you’re really trying to figure it all out.

"They were trying to figure out what the character was, what the scene was, and it was changing, and changing, and changing. It all made me so anxious that I could barely do it."

And she admitted it wasn't until after she took the role that she realised she "needed help in the anxiety department".

That meant she opted to turn down a return to the role.

And she also said she was "sad" at being unable to host Saturday Night Live at the time for the same reason.

She explained that she wished people would have been able to "help me navigate that kind of fear" but confessed she didn't realise the issue until it happened.

Jennifer is best known for her role on iconic rom-com Dirty Dancing.

She starred in the original release in 1987 as Baby Houseman who had a holiday romance with her dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

She is now in line to return to the role with a sequel in the works.

Jennifer will be one of a number of original cast members returning to the filming and acknowledged last year that the sequel will be "tricky and exciting".

As well as cast members returning, the sequel is set to feature an old set piece too – the made-up Catskills resort called Kellerman's.
