The followers of the NCIS franchise are in super luck, as its two most loved series are headed for a crossover. NCIS and NCIS: Origins are headed for a collision, but wait, there’s more. Mark Harmon is coming back to NCIS, reprising his age-old role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who also shed light on his decision to show up in the crossover.
As per Cinema Blend, Harmon expressed his emotions through a press release. He detailed how the showrunner of NCIS, as well as the producers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, reached out to him and discussed the plans for a revival of the character.
I’m very proud of the storytelling that David and Gina are doing on Origins. They continue to push boundaries and dive deeper into the characters’ backstories. They came to me with an idea for Gibbs that I liked, and it seemed like a good time to check in with him. I hope fans enjoy it.
It was back in 2021 that Harmon was last seen playing the character of Gibbs. This was during Season 19, Episode 4, titled Great Wide Open. For those unversed, CBS has already released a trailer of the much-awaited crossover, gripping the industry with the return of Harmon, in which he is totally unrecognizable, as per Screen Rant.
What Mark Harmon’s Comment Means For Gibbs’ Future In NCIS

Now that we know Harmon is in for some adventure again, we can hope that he shows up in future episodes as well.
While that does not mean we will catch multiple crossover episodes, but maybe NCIS can address a flashback on a new case, where Harmon is teased. Or let’s say the young Gibbs in Origins does something in his younger days that will affect Mark Harmon’s Gibbs.
Moreover, we sincerely hope that Harmon becomes a series regular in NCIS again.
Returning to the highly anticipated crossover of the two beloved series, it will be available on November 11, which is Veterans Day. The episode in question is an NCIS: Origins episode, titled “Funny How Time Slips Away,” as well as the flagship episode “Now and Then.”
NCIS: Origins is a spin-off of the original NCIS series, which began in 2003. Meanwhile, NCIS: Origins, a prequel entry, premiered its first season in October 2024. The series focuses on the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, portrayed by Austin Stowell. Joining him in the outing are Mariel Molino, Kyle Schmid, Lori Petty, and others.
What Will This Crossover Bring for the Fans of NCIS?

This new and exciting update comes amid the news of the NCIS and NCIS: Origins crossover, which will take you into the future, or let’s say, the past. If that confuses you, here’s what we are trying to say.
As per Collider, the crossover episode will address a decades-spanning mystery. The promo depicts that the team in NCIS: Origins will solve the original murder, while the officers from NCIS will be seen tracking an escaped convict. Interestingly, this will be the same killer that the team caught in NCIS: Origins years ago.
Meanwhile, the outlet reported that showrunner David J. North mentioned that the character of Harmon is “no longer alone.”
Here’s the official synopsis of the episode Funny How Time Slips Away (via Collider)
When a naval officer mysteriously dies in the ‘90s, Gibbs (Austin Stowell) and the team travel to the small dust-blown town of Serenity, Calif., where they encounter secret-harboring residents, an uncooperative sheriff, and an investigation that will reverberate for decades.
Shockingly, Harmon is not the only actor returning to the screen; the NCIS team will also bring in retired special agent Vera Strickland, played by Roma Maffia, who will assist them on the case.
