Is ‘Tulsa King’ Season 4 in Trouble? What Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount Exit Really Means as Production Moves Ahead

By Richard Brown 11/23/2025

Taylor Sheridan‘s departure from Paramount to NBCUniversal has raised questions about the future of Tulsa King, but Season 4 production is already underway. The creator signed a five-year television deal with NBCUniversal that begins in January 2029, after his current Paramount contract expires at the end of 2028.

Filming for Tulsa King Season 4 started in November 2025 at Eagle Rock Studios in Georgia, with Sylvester Stallone returning as mob boss Dwight Manfredi. However, the show faces significant behind-the-scenes challenges. Showrunner Terence Winter stepped down due to creative differences.

Despite these disruptions, Paramount retains ownership of all existing Sheridan properties and any seasons produced through 2028, meaning Tulsa King will continue under the studio’s control for some time.

Tulsa King Season 4 Gets Renewal With NOLA King Spinoff Development

Paramount+ renewed Tulsa King for Season 4 in September 2025, before Season 3 premiered (via The Hollywood Reporter). Stallone signed a deal in November 2024 to stay on the show for two additional seasons. Talks are underway to potentially extend the series to six seasons total.

Filming began on November 4, 2025 (via Filming in Georgia). Gretchen Mol joined the cast as series regular Amanda Clark, a Tulsa politician. The returning ensemble includes Martin Starr, Jay Will, Annabella Sciorra, Neal McDonough, and Dana Delany. Based on previous release patterns, Season 4 will likely premiere in September 2026.

Production has faced major upheaval. Paramount laid off 26 crew members just one week before shooting commenced. Emmy-nominated stunt coordinator Freddie Poole, who worked with Stallone for 14 years, was among those let go. Scott Stone of 101 Studios now serves as de facto showrunner and executive in charge of production. A search for a new showrunner is currently underway (via Variety).

Season 4 began production without a formal showrunner in place. Season 1 had Winter as showrunner. Season 2 operated without one, with director Craig Zisk handling most duties. Season 3 brought in Dave Erickson before creative differences led to his exit.

Paramount is also developing NOLA King, a spinoff starring Samuel L. Jackson as Russell Lee Washington Jr. Jackson’s character first appeared in Tulsa King Season 3 Episode 9. Production will most likely start in February 2026.

Taylor Sheridan’s Landman Season 2 Sets All Time Paramount+ Viewing Record

Landman Season 2 premiere pulled 9.2 million global streaming views in its first two days on November 16-18, 2025. It translates to approximately 450.8 million minutes of global viewing time. This makes it the most-watched premiere in Paramount+ history.

Since Season 2 debuted, Season 1 viewership surged 320% (via The Wrap). This indicates significant back-catalog engagement. The Billy Bob Thornton-led drama about West Texas oil workers premiered its first season to 35 million global viewers. Season 1 attracted 14.9 million global households in its first four weeks. It finished 2024 as the third-most-watched streaming original series across all platforms with 9.90 billion minutes viewed (via Collider).

Created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace based on the Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown, Landman now stands as Paramount+’s most-watched original of all time. Sheridan’s shows generated substantial subscriber loyalty and high average revenue per user for the platform. His exit creates a significant content pipeline loss for Paramount.
