George R.R. Martin has reportedly confirmed that multiple Game of Thrones sequels are currently in the works. He appeared at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival and shared that there were “a sequel or two” in development besides other prequel shows. The show currently has two prequel spinoffs: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Martin shared that there might be five or six shows in the works, adding that he was working on them with different people. However, he did not divulge the details of what shows or which characters were being developed. He shared (via Los Siete Reinos):
Apart from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms & House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development. The majority are prequels, and there are several in development – maybe 5 or 6 shows. And I’m not developing them alone, I’m working on them with other people. And yes, there’s a sequel or two [in the works].
While some were excited about Martin’s update, others were unimpressed that the author was taking on more projects before finishing The Winds of Winter. During his appearance at the New York Comic Con in October 2025, Martin addressed the “controversy” surrounding the book and shared that he was “still interested” in it (via EW).
He also defended his involvement in the Game of Thrones spinoff shows, sharing, “I love Winds of Winter. I’m still interested in it, I’m still working on it, but honestly, I love these other things too.”
Does George R.R. Martin’s Update Mean the Jon Snow Spinoff Is Back on the Table?

In 2022, a Jon Snow spin-off was reported to be in development, with the potential return of Kit Harington. In the following years, there had been few updates about the show. Last year, Harington confirmed that the show was shelved last year. During an interview with ScreenRant, he shared that the film was no longer in development as the studio couldn’t find the right story to tell. He shared:
And currently, it’s not. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.
After George R.R. Martin’s recent update, some fans believe that HBO might have put the Jon Snow spinoff back on the table. However, others believe that Martin’s update is about other possible sequels. The story of the sequel can follow any of the Stark siblings and their adventures after the end of Game of Thrones.
There is also the possibility that the sequel could open doors for new characters or groups of characters who emerged after the events of the original show. However, fans do have a guess on the prequel shows that are in development, including the confirmed Aegon’s Conquest prequel. Other possible prequels include:
Last November, HBO chief Casey Bloys shared that a Game of Thrones movie is in early development at Warner Bros (via Variety). Bloys shared that WB, HBO, and Martin are reading scripts that are worthy of being released in the theaters and becoming a major spectacle.
The Latest Update on George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin has delayed his sixth novel, The Winds of Winter, in the A Song of Ice and Fire series several times. He first announced that he had started writing the book back in June 2010. He predicted in 2011 that the book would take three years to finish (via The Guardian).
He had provided a hard estimate on the novel’s release date several times, but the author failed to finish the work on time. In May 2019, he even went on to joke that fans could “imprison me” if he wasn’t finished by July 2020.
According to Martin, the novel is approximately more than 1,500 pages long, and he had written almost 1,100 to 1,200 pages (via THR). During an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022, he revealed that he had given up hope on predicting the end of the novel. He shared:
I’m making progress, but I’ve given up on any hope of predicting the end. Every time I do, I don’t make it and everybody gets mad at me, and there’s no sense. It’ll be done when it’s done.
During his appearance at Oxford Writers’ House in August 2024, Martin was asked if he’d change anything from the books. In response, he humorously addressed the delay of The Winds of Winter. He shared (via GamesRadar+):
I don’t know, I could probably change more than one thing. If I could change one thing about one of my books I’d have them finished.
Martin also told Vanity Fair that he was unhappy with fans speculating about the unfinished novel when he came down with COVID-19 in 2022. The speculations around his death horrified the author a little, but he shared that he had made considerable progress on the novel during the two years of isolation.
In a December 2024 interview with THR, he shared that the book was “still a priority.” However, he also admitted that fans had already given up, saying he would never be finished. He shared, “Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!” During a 2025 interview with Time, he called The Winds of Winter “the curse of my life.”
In August 2025, he was confronted by a fan at a Seattle comic convention, who allegedly told him he was “not going to be around for much longer” (via NME).
