EXCLUSIVE: Peacemaker Star Reveals James Gunn Hid Season 2’s Biggest Cameo From Him – “There was some redaction”

By John Martin 10/21/2025

Peacemaker star Steve Agee didn’t know that one major Superman character was making a cameo appearance in the DC show. In the sixth episode of the second season, fans were surprised to see Nicholas Hoult return as Lex Luthor. Interestingly, Agee’s script was heavily redacted in this portion.

The star, who played John Economos in The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos, revealed this piece of information during his exclusive chat with FandomWire‘s Joshua Ryan. He revealed that though James Gunn gave all of the actors the script for this season at once, he didn’t give everyone everything.

While Agee received the entire script, there were portions of the script that were redacted. One particular redaction in his script was the scene where Lex appeared. He shared:

I got them all. There was some redaction in some of the scripts I’ve got. I didn’t know about Lex Luther. In that script episode, I think it’s six, the whole script is there. It’s just there are giant scenes that are completely blacked out. And I was like, ‘Ooo, what’s happening here?’

Agee also didn’t know about John Cena‘s fate at the end of the final episode of Season 2. He shared that the scene on Salvation was also redacted from his script. In the climax of the season, Cena’s titular character ended up on a planet called Salvation, which was used by ARGUS to imprison dangerous metahumans.

Agee also shared that not all stars received the entire script. He shared that David Denman, who appeared as Peacemaker’s brother on Earth X, only got the script of the episodes in which he appeared.

Steve Agee on Whether Peacemaker Will Return for Season 3

Steve Agee opened up about a potential Season 3 of Peacemaker, sharing that James Gunn was “not done with a lot of these characters.” However, Agee shared that he had a little clue as to what would happen after this season, especially with Gunn expanding the world with the Salvation and Checkmate storylines.

He revealed how a lot of fans were concerned that his character would be killed off at the end of Season 2. He shared that he got messages from friends and other fans, who told him, “I swear to God! You better not die, Economos. You better not die.”

Agee shared that he never even considered the possibility of Economos dying in this season. He shared that it was never foreshadowed anywhere in the previous episodes. He also shared that he got a lot of messages from people who said, “Please don’t kill Eagly.”

Agee shared that fans would get to see John Economos and the rest of the 11th Street Kids as part of Checkmate. He told FandomWire, “I have a feeling, you know, we’ll probably see us in Checkmate. I mean, it seemed like a clear setup in the finale. But yeah, you’re definitely going to see more of Economos.”

Gunn has yet to confirm a third season of the show. He earlier revealed on the official Peacemaker podcast that a third season was not in the works. He shared, “Peacemaker will be back. As this TV show? We’ll see exactly what form. We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long.”

Fans will have to wait a little longer for any official updates on a third season. Meanwhile, it is possible that we might see Agee and the others in other future DCU projects.

Steve Agee Recalled How James Gunn Brought Him Into the John Economos Role

Steve Agee recalled that James Gunn told him about the role of John Economos a while before they did The Suicide Squad. Interestingly, when the DC co-CEO talked to him about his first DC project, he wanted Agee to play the motion capture for the King Shark character. The role was voiced by Sylvester Stallone. Agee shared:

[James Gunn] said, ‘I’m going to have a character in there called King Shark who is in the comics. He’s like a big shark that has legs and walks and talks.’ He’s like, ‘I want you to do the motion capture because you’re like my tallest friend and this is a giant shark.’ He’s like, ‘I need somebody with some comedy chops.’ So he’s like, ‘I would love it if you would do that.’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely.’

Along with the mo-cap role for King Shark, Gunn also told him that he had another smaller part of a computer tech guy. Gunn initially told him that John Economos was a “one-off” character. For his part, Agee did a little research on Economos in the comics and learned that he was “the warden of Belle Reve prison.” He also learned that the character had multiple ex-wives.
