Following her appearance in the 2014 movie Noah, Emma Watson appeared for a light-hearted interview with Smosh to discuss her latest project. However, what was deemed to be a Q&A session ended up being a playful prank between the producer of the show, Anthony, a superfan, Joven, and the beloved actress.
That’s when, during the playful yet candid moment, Emma Watson was asked about her opinion on which Harry Potter character she might have ended up with. Addressing her previous interview with J.K. Rowling, where the author admitted to making a mistake by shipping Hermione with Ron, Watson was asked about her honest opinion.
Joven asked:
In your interview with J.K. Rowling, you discussed if Hermione should have ended up with Harry instead of Ron. We know who Hermione would have ended up with, but what about Emma Watson? Who would you have ended up with?
Watson replied:
Umm… none of the above.
With her honest response, Emma Watson dropped a bombshell that’s sure to send shockwaves through the hearts of Potterheads everywhere. However, later on, when she was begged to choose a team—be it team Harry or team Ron—the actress responded with a diplomatic answer where she inclined towards team Ron, perhaps because it was a safe choice.
While Ron and Hermione’s eventual pairing was a central plot point in both the books and films, Emma Watson’s answer to the question is sure to make waves. Without hesitation, as she revealed that she might have chosen none of the characters, her confession seems poised to leave Harry Potter fans in a frenzy.
J.K. Rowling Confessed to Making a Mistake by Shipping Hermione with Ron Instead of Harry
Meanwhile, prior to her interview with Smosh, Emma Watson had a curious conversation with the author of the beloved book series, J.K. Rowling. Conducting an interview during her tenure as guest editor of the British quarterly Wonderland (via CNN), Watson addressed the aspect of romance in the plot, with Rowling.
Having played the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, Emma Watson asked J.K Rowling if her onscreen character should have ended up with Daniel Radcliffe’s titular character Harry Potter, instead of Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley. Surprisingly, Rowling agreed that Harry and Hermione were a better match and that she might have made a mistake.
I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really.
For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I’m sorry.
Therefore, while Emma Watson fanned the fire by claiming that she wouldn’t have chosen anyone from the Harry Potter novels, the spark was first started by J.K. Rowling. Despite writing the novels in a particular way that felt soothing for readers, the author changed the course of the plot when she agreed that Hermione would have ended up with Harry if she wasn’t clinging to her preconceived notion.
