Emma Watson has taken a break from the spotlight in recent years as fans haven't seen her on the red carpet since 2023, when she posed alongside Malala Yousafzai for We Dare To Dream.
In a social media post from 2023, Watson explained her decision to break away from her role in Hollywood thanks to an astrological event. “Going into my 30s, I was in this moment of real change and [thinking] ‘What is going on?’,” she told Vogue in a 2023 interview.
“And it was someone else who said to me, ‘Oh, this is normal. You’re going through your Saturn return.’ [I was] like, ‘What is that and why has no one warned me?!’ I’ve spoken to so many women and so many of my friends who said, ‘Oh, yeah, between 28 and, like, 30, 31, 32, that kind of age, everything shifted.’”
She hasn't acted in a film since 2019's Little Women and doesn't seem to have a problem with stepping away.
“Because I’m in a career that moves very quickly, the decision to take time to do these things felt like a very big decision,” she admitted. “[Choosing] to go back and write and study and get behind the camera was terrifying for me because I’d never done it before. I had always been in front of the camera; I’d always been an actor.”
Her absence from the public eye makes it that much more impactful when she does decide to venture into the film world. That's exactly what she did this week when she made her return to Cannes for the first time since she attended the film festival while starring in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring.
Fans were stunned to see her back in the public eye.
"emma???? the way she shows up out of nowhere is so funny to me," one person said.
"Wait is she coming back to acting?" another wondered.
"Mother finally woke up from hibernation," joked a third.
Fans are clearly wondering what this means for Watson's acting future.
