Emma Stone debuts brunette pixie cut at Golden Globes 2025

Emma Stone has revealed a dramatic new look, switching her typically bobbed or shoulder length hair for a cropped pixie cut.

The actor arrived on the red carpet at the 82nd Golden Globes looking radiant in a tulip-silhouette, strapless red gown, but it was her bold new locks that really commanded attention.

Stone is no stranger to a hair transformation, having previously switched up her locks to long and flowing for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, changed her hue from red to brunette to blonde for The Amazing Spider-Man and even streaking it white for her part as Cruella. But this latest chop may be her most extreme hair pivot yet.

Stone's long-time hairstylist, Mara Roszak, shared an image of the star's new look to Instagram alongside an image of some of the products she used to style the dramatic new look.

"It's been growing out, and it's looking so stunning—very nineties in that nostalgic way,” Roszak told Allure of Stone's style transformation.

The 35-year-old actor is rumoured to have shaved her locks for a role in her next film Bugonia, which will is set to be released in November later this year.

Other actors have also embraced the pixie cut after shaving their heads for a film. Anne Hathaway, for example, opted for the style following her performance as Fantine in Les Misérables. Halle Berry has famously sported a shorter style in James Bond's Die Another Day. Emma Watson also cut off her hair after filming the last of the Harry Potter franchise.

“To be honest, I felt more myself with that haircut. I felt bold, and it felt empowering because it was my choice," she told Wonderland.

"It felt sexy too. Maybe it was the bare neck, but for some reason I felt super, supersexy."

More recently, in 2021, just after dying her blonde hair a deep brown for her role in The Wonder, Florence Pugh revealed a choppy pixie cut on Instagram. She then went even shorter and debuted a buzz cut at the 2023 Met Gala.

As well as dying her blonde hair a chocolate brown, Brie Larson also recently debuted a soft pixie cut, while Kendall Jenner and Camila Cabello, who are both no strangers to switching up their styles, also previously showcased pixie cuts.

Then of course Davina McCall recently debuted a brand new hair do, with images from the new series of The Masked Singer revealing the presenter looking unrecognisable in a blonde, pixie cut wig.

Origins of the pixie cut

Up until World War I (1914–18) long and perfectly-styled hair had been seen as a sign of femininity, but in the 20s there was a subtle shift in opinions, with shorter hair becoming a symbol of fun and freedom.

In 1927, opera singer Mary Garden wrote about her decision to cut her hair in an issue of American women's magazine, Pictorial Review, writing that her shorter hair was a "state of mind and not merely a new manner of dressing my head".

"I consider getting rid of our long hair one of the many little shackles that women have cast aside in their passage to freedom," she added, as reported by Encyclopedia of Fashion.

The short hair trend quietened for a couple of decades but in the 50s made a resurgence thanks to Audrey Hepburn’s iconic appearance as a royal princess with a pixie cut in Roman Holiday

Later, Mia Farrow boosted the pixie’s profile after her appearance in the 1968 psychological thriller Rosemary's Baby and supermodel Twiggy also threw a light on cropped hair in the 1960s with her iconic cut.

And now a whole plethora of female celebrities are embracing shorter locks.

Psychology of a new hair style

Although Stone's new look is the rumoured result of a role in an upcoming project, experts say a change of hair style can boost confidence and self-esteem.

"This is about metamorphosis," psychologist and relationship expert Barbara Santini, previously told Yahoo Life. "It is much deeper than a simple change of style. "When you change those locks, you're often changing more than just hair—you're casting off an old identity, even if temporarily."

She says we should think of it as "hitting the 'refresh' button on our life browser. Suddenly, we're the artist, and our hair is the canvas".

Stone's new look certainly seemed to have gone down well with fans, with many heading to social media to comment on how much the short style suits the star.

"Emma stone with the hair of 2025… yes please," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Wow so cute Emma," another wrote.

"Emma Stone's new haircut looks great," another adds.

Considering Stone's the chop has made such an impact, it wouldn't be a surprise if her latest appearance sparks a resurgence in pixie cut requests at hair salons everywhere.

“I think what makes the Pixie cut so popular is that it’s a real power cut, but when it's done with that soft outline, like Emma's, it gives so much femininity to it," explains Philipp Haug, co-owner, Haug London Haus. "Like the bob, it’s an iconic cut that doesn’t age.

"What’s also exciting about it is that it works with different textures," Haug adds. "It can work from very straight to very curly hair and when it's done with that softness it can work on everybody.”
