Selena Gomez‘s latest voice change is freaking out some fans. The actress and singer has undergone a drastic change in her voice from her Disney days to her current deep voice. For instance, fans could feel the difference in her voice when she appeared in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, even though her style & attitude as Alex Russo remained pretty much the same.
Some fans weren’t exactly fans of this deep voice, even calling it monotonous. They even alleged her voice was unbearable in her hit Hulu comedy series, Only Murders in the Building. The Who Says singer isn’t much dependent on her voice these days, as she makes her money from her billion-dollar beauty brand, Rare Beauty.
She appeared at the FortuneMPW Summit as the founder of her brand and gave away some amazing insights to other brand owners. However, some fans noticed something other than her business acumen during the discussion. Her voice has apparently changed, and for some fans, it was not a pleasant transition. Some of the fan comments read:
Has her voice always been this annoying? https://t.co/4yX95QjxLQ
It was cute on the waverly place but now 😩
I love Steve and Martin and still can't watch their show because of her dull monotone drone.
It’s f’n insane.

Fans also noticed that it wasn’t just her lower-pitched voice but also her congested-sounding tone that made the voice change so apparent. While many attributed the voice change to her natural vocal maturity, some also had other theories.
Is Selena Gomez’s Voice Change Caused By Her Lupus Diagnosis?

One possible explanation that fans came up with for Selena Gomez’s drastic change in her voice was her Lupus diagnosis. The Emilia Pérez actress was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease in 2013, and she kept it under wraps before revealing it to the world in 2015.
Fans are not entirely wrong about this speculation. The disease can affect a person’s joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs. According to a report by Healthline, the disease has the ability to alter a person’s voice. It can cause inflammation in the vocal cords, lungs, or surrounding muscles, thus changing the voice.
The disease may also cause vocal fatigue, hoarseness, altered voice quality, reduced vocal intensity, and voice cracks. Interestingly, some fans disputed this theory, even claiming that the actress’s cosmetic procedures may have made it difficult for her to talk. Gomez has not acknowledged undergoing any kind of procedures.
The People You Know singer opened up about her disease and shared that she was unable to carry children. Gomez told Billboard in 2015, “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke.” She received a kidney from her friend Francia Raisa in 2017. In 2024, she told Time that the kidney transplant was working well for her.
She also revealed to Amy Poehler that her lupus caused arthritis in her fingers. She shared that it was the reason why Rare Beauty has accessible packaging. Gomez appears to be in a happy place in life right now, as she and Benny Blanco recently tied the knot in a star-studded Santa Barbara wedding.
Fans Also Were Quick to Judge Ariana Grande on Her Voice Change

Before fans went after Ariana Grande for the change in her physical appearance, there were wild discussions about her voice change. Many fans know that the singer has a wide vocal range when it comes to her singing. However, it was her talking voice that shocked many fans.
Most recently, her voice became the talking point when fans noticed her drastic voice change in the midst of an interview. When she appeared on Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed, fans noticed a moment when she went back to her old high-pitched voice (via E! News).
Many fans commented that they hated Grande’s new deep voice, instead preferring her old voice. Interestingly, after the podcast appearance, she addressed her voice change. She shared, “I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing i’m doing. I’ve always done this BYE” (via THR). She also told Vanity Fair:
There is a part of the world that isn’t familiar with what it takes to transform your voice, whether it’s singing or taking on a different dialect for a role or doing a character voice for something.
She also claimed that people don’t find it weird when male actors change their voices. The singer is currently working on the second part of Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good.
