In a recent interview panel with Harper’s Bazaar, popular singer-songwriter and actress Cynthia Erivo opened up about her androgynous look, claiming that she loves this style over conventional ones. She also commented on the identity problems that people of the LGBTQ community face when being misgendered or misidentified, saying:
Teaching people on a daily basis how to address you, and dealing with the frustration of reteaching people a word that has been in the human vocabulary since the dawn of time: they/them. Words used to describe pedantically two or more people; poetically, a person who is simply more.
Cynthia Erivo’s statement became quite a strong comment as it reverberated with fans and other members of the LGBTQ community, solidifying her stance in support of them. This statement might also be her own conclusion to admitting who she truly was in the past.
Cynthia Erivo Revealed How She Came to Accept Herself as Queer
Strong comments and sentiments towards the LGBTQ community stem from the fact that Erivo herself is a part of it, where she once claimed that she was bisexual by nature. But this wasn’t something that she easily came to accept, much less tell the world that she was queer.
In an interview panel for the cover page of British Vogue in 2022, the Grammy and Tony Award winner opened up about coming out as bisexual, talking about how even today, it’s not easy to open up about these things. Cynthia Erivo revealed how she wanted to tell everyone who they were at the end of the day, saying:
[Many LGBTQ+ people] still feel the need to be constantly justifying why we deserve to be treated as equal beings, when really the only difference is that we love differently and we express ourselves differently. Rather than being chastised for that we should be commended for being brave. That’s the most important thing: giving people the space to show up fully as who they are.
Therefore, through these types of questions to herself and interpersonal explorations, the actress solidified her beliefs in the community and her own self.
Is Wicked Spin-off in the Works: Here’s What We Know So Far
With the second part of the story being released recently, it seems like the fandom for the Wicked movie series is growing substantially, which means demand for more from the IP starring Ariana Grande.
And in an interview with The Ankler, the film series’ music composer Stephen Schwartz revealed how he and writer Winnie Holzman didn’t have a plan for a sequel, but something like a spin-off was definitely in the works. At the same time, he also hinted at the fact that perhaps in this project, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s presence will be missed by the audience.
Therefore, while these may still be ideas, there’s a high possibility we can expect more from the Wicked franchise in the future.
