Colin Farrell’s Pre-Rehab Habit Made Tom Cruise Very, Very Angry in Their Only Movie Together

By Mike Jackson 10/30/2025

Steven Spielberg’s 2002 sci-fi movie, Minority Report, is a masterpiece that often gets overshadowed by the merit of its own excellence. Tom Cruise stole every frame he found himself in; Colin Farrell gave an excellent supporting performance; the strength of the story did the rest.

However, one unmistakable aspect of the film that never caught the audience’s eye was Farrell’s wild behind-the-scenes partying that not only disrupted filming but caused some major friction between him and the lead star. To this day, Cruise has been unable to forgive and forget about the incident that got the Tigerland actor on his bad side.

Colin Farrell Is Still Haunted By 1 Mistake He Made on the Minority Report Set

Birthdays are known to make all of us a bit existential, but Colin Farrell took it to the next level on the set of Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report. During The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor recalled how he asked the $120 million production for a day off from filming on his birthday, and despite being refused, arrived on set totally hungover the next morning.

What happened next was so unbearably humiliating for Farrell on a professional level that it’s a wonder how an actor on the rise could come out of an incident like this unscathed (via Variety):

It was terrible. I will never forget the line I had that I couldn’t get out. It was, ‘I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.’ That was the line that started the scene. I remember [the crew] coming up and saying, ‘Do you want to go out and take a breath of fresh air?’

And I remember thinking, ‘If I go out and take a breath of fresh air, then I’ll be under more pressure when I come back in to be better.’ And I went, ‘No, we’ll just go through it.’ We did 46 takes. Tom wasn’t very happy with me. Tom, who I love, was not very happy!

Even Philip K. Dick could not have dreamed up a scene so bleak and dystopian as this.

While recollecting his spiraling highs and lows directly impacting his work on one of the most important films of his career, Farrell admitted that he went to rehab two years after the fiasco, that his alcoholism “was not cool, but it worked in the moment, [and] it was terrible.”

Numerous A-listers, most notably Robert Downey Jr. and Charlie Sheen, who derailed their entire careers to the point of no return, have managed to make a full 180° recovery concerning their public image. Now, Colin Farrell joins the list of celebrities who are thriving in their sobriety.

As of 2025, Farrell has been 19 years sober because of his trip to rehab in 2006 after the Minority Report fiasco of the early 2000s.
