Directed by Jessica Swale, MERV follows a separated couple, Russ and Anna, as they navigate the challenges of co-parenting their dog, Merv, after he starts showing signs of sadness following their breakup. It prompts the duo to put aside their differences for his sake.
The official synopsis of the movie reads,
When their beloved dog Merv loses his spark after their split, Anna and Russ are forced into the world’s most awkward co-parenting arrangement. Hoping to shake Merv out of his funk, Russ takes him to Florida for a much-needed getaway—only for Anna to show up unexpectedly. As Merv slowly gets his groove back, it turns out fixing their dog’s broken heart may lead to a few sparks of their own.

Charlie Cox on Embracing a New Comedic Side in MERV
Charlie Cox is stepping into a new territory with the Prime Video rom-com, MERV. Cox revealed that the shift in tone was a new challenge for him, and he leaned heavily on his co-star Zooey Deschanel and director Jessica Swale for guidance.
“Tonally, this movie is unlike anything I’ve done before, so I relied on Zooey and Jess to guide me,” he told People, talking about the new movie. He also praised his co-star, Zooey Deschanel, calling the actress one of the most “accomplished” actresses in the industry, as he continued,
There are very few actors more accomplished than she is. I really tried to learn as much as I could from her and be as present as possible in the scenes.
Director Jessica Swale also lauded the pair’s chemistry, describing them as “the perfect rom-com couple” and expressing her excitement at the prospect of working with them together again.
