The Outsiders continued to break box office records for the sixth week in the row.
The musical brought in $1.46 million for the week ended July 28, with capacity over 100 percent. The show, based on the novel by S.E. Hinton about teens growing up in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been on an upward trend since winning the Tony Award for best musical on June 16.
The show has not changed its price range of regular tickets priced at $67 to $187 or its top premium price of $328, but the average ticket price has been inching up each week, with the average ticket price hitting $174.07 last week.
The Lion King was the top grossing musical for the week, aided by nine performances, instead of the typical eight, and bringing in $2.6 million. Wicked and Hamilton were the second and third top grossing show, with $2.3 million and $2.02 million respectively.
Hell’s Kitchen, a best musical nominee based on Alicia Keys’ songs, which saw a performance from Keys and Jay-Z on the Tony Awards telecast, was the fourth top grossing in the industry for the week. The musical brought in $1.7 million, down $22,000 from the prior week, but continuing to play at 100 percent capacity, as it has been for several weeks.
Overall, cumulative grosses for the industry remained largely flat, even with two fewer shows playing last week, after the play Home and the revival of Who’s Tommy closed on July 21. Attendance was down 4 percent.
