BBC Tried Blocking J.K. Rowling Interview For the Same Reason Both Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson Hate Her (Report)

By Kevin Brown 11/10/2025

A new report from former BBC diplomatic editor Mark Urban’s Substack page suggests some staff members from the BBC allegedly tried to “block” an interview with the Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling. Why? Because of her controversial views on women’s rights and gender identity (via The Standard).

Urban mentioned that one Newsnight producer “with strong views on trans issues” called Rowling “very problematic” during an editorial meeting. He even explained that the BBC, like many media organisations, has seen a “generational change” that brought in “a younger, more dirigiste kind of progressivism”.

Thus I was in a meeting where one producer with strong views on trans issues tried to veto an interview bid for JK Rowling, saying she was ‘very problematic’ (she didn’t want to come on anyway).

Although it’s still an alleged report based on Mark Urban’s claims, the rumor has sparked fresh debate about whether the BBC’s newsroom has become too influenced by internal politics and personal beliefs.

After Donald Trump’s Speech, the BBC Got More Cautious About J.K. Rowling’s Interview

Meanwhile, it appears that the BBC is being extra cautious in the wake of the chaos surrounding Donald Trump’s speech. It turns out that the news company recently faced a huge problem after airing a documentary that allegedly edited parts of Trump’s 2021 speech. It led BBC chairman Samir Shah to apologize for an “error of judgment” (via Reuters).

It has been revealed that the Panorama program was accused of cutting two different sections together, making it seem like Trump encouraged the Capitol Hill riots in 2021. This led to a major backlash, resulting in the resignation of the BBC’s director general, Tim Davie, and head of news, Deborah Turness.

So now, because of this controversy, BBC bosses have become rather careful about which interviews they should allow on air. Perhaps the network doesn’t want to face more criticism while dealing with the Trump backlash. That’s why when J.K. Rowling’s name came up for an interview, some BBC staff allegedly decided to block it.

But it seems that although the BBC reportedly tried to avoid adding fuel to an already tense situation, they messed things up even more. Their alleged move has now raised questions about the company’s internal problems.

The British Author Has a History of Being Shunned By Her Harry Potter Stars

So far, apart from her global fame for the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling has also become one of the world’s most controversial authors, making headlines for her views on gender and women’s rights. This has led many fans and even her own Harry Potter stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, to disagree with her comments.

Both Radcliffe and Watson, who played Harry and Hermione respectively, in the Warner Bros. films, have publicly supported the trans community while openly creating distance with Rowling. Previously, Daniel Radcliffe denounced the Harry Potter author’s regressive views while working with the Trevor Project

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.

Meanwhile, Emma Watson has also distanced herself from Rowling on several occasions, like her 2022 BAFTA speech, in which she stated she was “here for all of the witches”, which implied her solidarity with the trans community. Now, while both the stars have refuted Rowling’s opinions, the author has said she would never forgive them.

The author’s strong stance shows that she isn’t backing down, no matter the backlash. Therefore, the conflict between J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter cast continues to spark headlines, especially in the wake of the BBC allegedly blocking the author’s interview.

Do you think the BBC was right to have reportedly blocked J.K. Rowling’s interview? Let us know in the comments.

Harry Potter films are streaming in the US on HBO Max.
