Amanda Seyfried is opening up about her hopes for Mamma Mia 3. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor pitched Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney as a potential castmate.
I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids. Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.
Previously, in an interview with ABC News, Seyfried had pitched the Espresso singer, possibly portraying her on-screen daughter in the threequel, after Sabrina Carpenter went viral covering ABBA’s Mamma Mia at a concert.
Yeah – technically, she could. You’re right. Actually, doesn’t matter. You’re right. You know what? Old age makeup for me. I don’t mind. I’m an actor, I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. I’m a big fan.
As for Sweeney, the actress had previously told Variety in 2023 that she has always wanted to go to Greece, loves Mamma Mia, and would be happy to do something like that.
Is Mamma Mia 3 Officially Confirmed?

Unfortunately, while there has been a strong buzz and cast interest, Mamma Mia 3 hasn’t been fully greenlit. Producer Judy Craymer had remarked to Deadline in 2023 that the threequel is in early stages and she has figured out a way to bring all favorite characters back.
Then, in 2024, actress Christine Baranski revealed that Craymer has a full-fledged plan for a third film and that she will make it happen. However, Seyfried, during her interview with ABC News, had stated that everybody says the film is going to happen, but she hadn’t seen any script then.
More recently, Craymer told Deadline that the film will happen when it has to happen. She also added that the movie is important for her creatively more than anything and that it will happen soon. However, there has yet to be an official confirmation.
Will The Original Cast Return for Mamma Mia 3?

There is optimism among the franchise’s key players. Seyfried has expressed her willingness to return, and other original cast members like Christine Baranski have confirmed that producer Judy Craymer has approached them with potential story ideas.
During her interview with Entertainment Tonight, Seyfried revealed a bit about the plot:
I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter. Meryl [Streep] is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing.
As for Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney, these are just fan casting for now. The original film starred Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and Dominic Cooper.
While nothing is set in stone, the combination of renewed cast interest, a written script, and affectionate comments from key players makes the notion of Mamma Mia 3 feel more possible than ever.
