Allison Lanier Announces Shocking ‘Young and the Restless’ Exit: ‘It’s Time to Grow’

Allison Lanier revealed that her time on The Young and the Restless will be coming to an end.

“Hi guys!! This Friday, May 2nd, will be my last episode on Y&R!” Lanier, 34, wrote via X on Wednesday, April 30. “I’ve loved the journey and learned so much but it’s time to grow in a different direction.”

Lanier expressed her appreciation for the Young and the Restless viewers who have loyally been by her side over the years.

“Very grateful for all of the Y&R fans who have supported me,” she added.

Several of Lanier’s fans took to the comments section of her post to express their disappointment over news she is leaving the soap opera.

“You played Summer Newman the best. You brought growth and class to her character. Will miss you!” one user replied.

Another responded, “Nooooo Allison you have been such a joy to watch in the role of Summer. Sorry to hear this! You took this role and made it your own and had some fantastic scenes! You’re a brilliant actress! I’m crushed!”

Us Weekly has reached out to The Young and the Restless for comment.

Lanier joined The Young and the Restless in 2022. She took over the role of the iconic Summer Newman following Hunter King’s departure. The character — who is the daughter of Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) and Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) — was first introduced to the soap in 2006 and played by multiple child actresses. In 2012, Summer was rapidly aged to a teenager with Lindsay Bushman being the first to play the adult version of the character.

Not only was Lanier’s portrayal of Summer beloved by fans but it also received critical acclaim. In April 2024, Lanier earned her first Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

“Incredibly grateful and honored (also shocked!) to be nominated for the @daytimeemmys this year!” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “Alongside some of the most talented and wonderful people. Big congrats especially to my lovely @youngandrestlesscbs fam, cast and crew, for all of the nominations !!!!”

While Lanier didn’t take home the award, her costar Courtney Hope ended up winning the category for her portrayal of Sally Spectra.

In addition to her time on The Young and the Restless, Lanier appeared in independent films It Happened in L.A., Fish Bones and Mia. She also had a guest role on the Prime dramedy Red Oaks.
