Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Alien: Earth season 1, episode 8!Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley has offered an update for season 2 following the season 1 finale, hinting at the TV show's potential future. Alien: Earth season 1's story has come to a close, offering both bookends and some dangling threads for the prequel's unique storyline. It also explored its various creatures throughout, tying it with themes about humanity.

In interviews with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns and Graeme Guttmann for the season 1 finale, Hawley discussed the possibility of Alien: Earth season 2 coming to fruition. The series creator explained how the viewership numbers are being considered for the show's potential renewal, and how these will determine the possibility of the story's continuation. See what Hawley said below:

ScreenRant: So now that we are at the finale, by the way, I know you’ve talked before about having multiple seasons in mind for this kind of show. How are we looking on the future, are there proper episode outlines in the works, or talks with FX?

Noah Hawley: Yeah, certainly. We’re talking about the future of the show, and FX does their homework. They really make sure that they understand what the viewership numbers are. And on some level, it’s where you end more than where you started that tells you what the appetite for a season 2 is. So, we’ve got our last episode next week, and I’ve been doing my part creatively and really thinking about where I would take the show going forward. Certainly, I don’t want the show to be off the air for any longer than it absolutely has to be. So, there’s some urgency there to get us going as quickly as possible. But ultimately, this is a Disney decision, so I’m excited to see what they do. There’s so many great hard rock songs left to play.

It sounds like there are plans in place for where Alien: Earth season 2 will take the story, even if the show itself hasn't been officially renewed as of writing. Prior to the release of the series, Hawley had confirmed the show is meant to be multiple seasons long. The story of Earth's initial contact with Xenomorphs is just the beginning.

While there are many characters in Alien: Earth who won't be around for the story's future, these first eight episodes offered a strong foundation upon which a larger narrative can be built. Because of the many intriguing concepts its introduced, from Wendy's ability to control a Xenomorph to the Ocellus' origins, there are plenty of strong ideas for more.

Since reviews for Alien: Earth have been positive, it's a good sign the series will come back as intended. The show has plenty of ideas that still haven't been fully explored, with the Xenomorphs being just the tip of the iceberg. Given Hawley's introduction of new concepts, an expanded look at the TV show's world is ripe for unique storytelling.

Even though the show's exact future remains unclear, Alien: Earth's concepts are clearly intended to be the foundation for a much larger, multi-season storyline within the sci-fi horror universe. The exact nature of Hawley's plans may not be clear right now, but he seems to be itching to get started on the expansion of the classic franchise.

With season 2 plans in place, it would be interesting to see how Alien: Earth can continue exploring its core themes and characters after the events of the season 1 finale. The interesting world it's been building feels like the starting point of something much larger and even more interesting, potentially adding new ideas in its next chapter as well.

All episodes of Alien: Earth are now streaming on Hulu.
