After 5 Years of Speculation, Chloë Grace Moretz Comes Out as a Gay Woman, Endorses Kamala Harris

Actress Chloë Grace Moretz referred to herself as a “gay woman” in a November 2 Instagram post saying she voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election.

“I believe the government has no right over my body as a woman, and that the decision over my body should come ONLY from myself and my doctor,” she wrote in the caption of the post, which shows an “I Voted Early” sticker on a pair of jeans. “Kamala Harris will protect that for us.”

Moretz added that “I believe in the need for legal protections that protect the LGBTQ+ community as a gay woman,” and that Americans need “to have access to the care we need and deserve.”

Although this post ostensibly marks the first time that the Nimona star has publicly addressed her sexuality, she’s been romantically linked to model Kate Harrison, who often appears in her Instagram posts, since 2018. In June 2023, Harrison shared a selfie of the couple attending the NYC Dyke march in an Instagram post of her own. In April, People reported that Moretz and Harrison both wore rings on their left ring fingers, sparking engagement rumors.

Moretz has long been private about her relationships. When asked about her dating life during a 2022 interview with The i paper, she replied, “I like to keep my private life private. I’m in a long-term relationship. And I really enjoy that.”

Fans who have watched Moretz's and Harrison's relationship closely over the years have called it a “glass closet,” similar to the anti-coming out approaches of celebrities like Queen Latifah or Jodie Foster who lived somewhat openly in a same-sex relationship before explicitly speaking about it in public.

However, while promoting Desiree Akhavan’s queer conversion camp coming-of-age drama The Miseducation of Cameron Post in 2018, the actress challenged a reporter from The Independent during an interview after the reporter mentioned that a recent article on queer erasure in film had named Moretz as an example of a straight star playing a queer role.

“Well, I think what’s important is don’t assume anyone’s sexuality,” Moretz said at the time. “We’re all human, trying to be with the people that we fall in love with, and be the best person that we can be. But don’t assume people’s sexualities. And don’t project your own issues onto them. Why don’t we let people be who they wanna be?”
