Aaron Paul Explains Why He Refused to Come Back as Powerplex in Invincible Season 4

By John Davis 11/22/2025

Aaron Paul has addressed his exit from the animated series Invincible, revealing why he chose to step away from playing Powerplex after his debut in Season 3. During an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games podcast, Paul revealed that, though he was asked to return, he left the show due to the mental strain the role began taking on him. He shared,

It was just way too gruelling on my psyche. Powerplex is not just messing around. He’s going through things. Turmoil. I put myself in that skin, and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable in, to be honest.

The Breaking Bad star emphasized that while he loved the show and the people he worked with, he couldn’t continue once he realized what the character had done to him.

“I didn’t want to do it anymore…the thing is, everyone involved in that is amazing. What it did to me, I didn’t like. I couldn’t continue,” he added, noting that he loves the show and has watched every episode.

Robert Kirkman Emphasized Powerplex’s Significance in Mark’s Growth

Introduced in Invincible Season 3, Scott Duvall, also known as Powerplex, quickly emerged as one of the show’s most emotionally charged antagonists.

A former scientist at the Global Defense Agency, Powerplex’s motivations are rooted in personal tragedy as his sister Jessica and her daughter Gretchen were killed during the devastating Chicago battle between Mark Grayson and Nolan.

Show creator Robert Kirkman has highlighted Powerplex as a crucial turning point in Mark’s development. “To have a character like Powerplex shining a light on some of the darker aspects of what Mark has done in the past allows him to question where he stands,” Kirkman explained in an interview with Den of Geek.

He added that Season 3 is defined by the “shifting ground under Mark,” making Powerplex the catalyst for a vital “rug pulling moment” in the young hero’s evolution.

Although Season 3 ends with Powerplex imprisoned, Kirkman noted that he had plans for the character, especially with Aaron Paul delivering such a powerful performance. However, Paul has since confirmed he will not return to the role in future seasons.

When Will Invincible Season 4 Be Released?

With Invincible Season 3 wrapping earlier in 2025, fans are already eagerly anticipating Season 4. The hit animated superhero series has momentum on its side, having been renewed not only for a fourth season but also for a fifth.

“Right now, the focus is making sure that the show comes out as regularly as possible, and we’re trying not to have any distractions that are going to keep us from that,” Robert Kirkman shared, addressing the progress in Invincible Season 4.

Following the format of previous seasons, Season 4 is expected to feature eight episodes and will reportedly adapt the highly anticipated Viltrumite War storyline from the comics.

One confirmed update is the addition of Matthew Rhys to the cast in the role of Dinosaurus, confirmed by Robert Kirkman at SDCC (via GamesRadar+). While Prime Video has not officially announced a release date, Invincible Season 4 is expected to premiere in March 2026.
