Actor Hong Sung-won, who gained recognition in the drama “Our Unwritten Seoul,” issued an apology after facing criticism for a sexist comment.
Hong posted an apology on social media Monday, saying, “I sincerely apologize for the inappropriate expression I used during a pre-show performance that caused discomfort. I take full responsibility for disappointing both the audience and my colleagues,” adding, “I will be more cautious with my words and actions going forward.”
The controversy arose from his ad-lib during the musical “Burn the Witch” on Saturday at Hongik University Daehangno Art Center in Seoul, when he quoted a Korean proverb that says, “When a hen crows, the household falls apart.” The phrase suggests that misfortune follows if a woman raises her voice or exercises authority in a home, and it drew sharp criticism from female fans.
Hong made his debut in the 2019 musical “Excalibur” and has since appeared in productions like “Black Mary Poppins,” and “Clover.” He left an strong impression on viewers earlier this year in tvN’s “Our Unwritten Seoul,” where he played Kim Tae-yi, a data analyst.
He is currently performing in “Burn the Witch,” a black comedy that opened in July and follows a hunt for witches. The cast also includes Hong Ji-hee, Han Chae-ah and Park Soo-bin.
