Fact Check: Is Margot Robbie Playing Britney Spears in Her Biopic?

An X rumor ran with the story that Margot Robbie is in negotiations to play the role of Britney Spears in a biopic. It was earlier reported that a biopic was being made based on the Toxic singer’s memoir, The Woman In Me (via The Ankler). It was further reported that the movie landed a deal with Universal Pictures and would be directed by Wicked director Jon M. Chu.

However, the rumor about Robbie playing the lead appears to be false. Beauty industry expert Sean Garrette, who worked with the likes of Rihanna, responded to the post. Garrette claimed that the news about Robbie’s potential casting in the role was false.

While Robbie is not in negotiations to star in the movie, it was earlier reported that the Barbie star’s production company tried to acquire the rights to Spears’s number one New York Times bestselling memoir. It was reported that there was also interest from Shonda Rhimes and Brad Pitt’s Plan B. Universal also reportedly beat Sony, Warner Bros, Fox, Disney, and Netflix to the rights.

Britney Spears Biopic: What Do We Know About the Movie Plans?

The film adaptation of Britney Spears’s The Woman in Me was greenlit in August 2024 after Universal acquired the rights. Jon M. Chu and his Wicked producer Marc Platt were attached to the project at the time. The book sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. as of January 2024 and over 3 million copies in print worldwide.

The book covered the Criminal singer’s journey to stardom and the challenges she faced, including the life-long conservatorship she was once held in. It also described her relationships with Justin Timberlake, Wade Robson, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Federline. She also addressed her relationship with her sister Jamie Lynn, her other public controversies, and motherhood.

In an X post, Spears shared last year that she was working on a secret project with Platt. She further shared that he always made some of her favorite movies.

Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥

According to The Ankler’s source, the Universal deal for the book rights is estimated to be in the eight figures. The studio is already working on a few other biopics based on musicians. It has put a Snoop Dogg biopic and a Prince music-inspired movie in development. A Pharrell Williams-inspired movie wrapped production last year.

Margot Robbie’s Upcoming Movies: What Are Her Actual Projects?

The Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell-starring movie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, recently flopped at the box office. However, the actress has more promising projects lined up, including Saltburn director Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Warner Bros. recently dropped a trailer for the movie, and fans have already loved the pairing of Robbie against Euphoria fame Jacob Elordi. According to reports, WB has spent $80 million on this adaptation. Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel was adapted to the screen multiple times, but the movie claims to be a loose adaptation of the novel.

Fennell’s provocative filmmaking in Promising Young Woman and Saltburn is proof enough that audiences are going to experience a wild ride when the film arrives in theaters on February 13, 2026.

It is also reported that Robbie would be leading the new movie from the Ocean’s franchise, which was first announced back in August 2022. She would be playing the mother to the characters of Danny and Debbie Ocean, played by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock in previous films, in this prequel.

According to Variety, Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung took over the film from Jay Roach, who was initially on board to direct. Carrie Solomon, writer of Netflix’s A Family Affair, was roped in to pen the script.

Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared with TheWrap that Robbie is involved in a Pirates movie. The producer said, “She’s still involved.” The producer didn’t confirm whether Robbie had her own separate film or was part of the sequel.
