Samuel L. Jackson: My Django Unchained Character Was Even More Unhinged, Tarantino ‘Edited Out the Bad Parts’

By Kevin Brown 11/18/2025

If you remember watching Django Unchained, then you will also definitely remember Samuel L. Jackson’s role as the deplorable and evil Stephen in the film. But according to the star in an interview with Charlie Rose, his character had even more monstrous and disgusting acts that were scrapped from the final cut by director Quentin Tarantino. Jackson said:

Now, the disappointment in all that is, as wonderful as Stephen is in Django, that’s the tame Stephen. [Tarantino] edited out all the really bad things that I did in the movie. He said ‘I don’t want anybody to kill you.’

Thus, if the filmmaker hadn’t taken out all these other things before the film’s release, we may have witnessed an entirely new realm of darkness in the film. And as much as Tarantino is called a racist, Jackson believes it’s not true, and loves to work with him on any of his projects.

Factors That Make Samuel L. Jackson Love Working With Quentin Tarantino

In the same interview with Rose, Samuel L. Jackson stated that the racist title people associate with Quentin Tarantino is BS, because until now, all the characters that Jackson has played in his films have been amazing. From Pulp Fiction to Django Unchained, every single character was written perfectly, which is exciting for the star to portray in front of the camera.

And more than good writing, Tarantino knows which character trait will best suit Jackson in the film, which is why he also tries to tailor them to an individual star’s needs. Talking about this in a Q&A (via AP Entertainment), he said:

So there are a lot of more things that you have to embody as a character and bring with you to do it. The fact that I spent years and years in theater helped me a lot to embrace what Quentin does. And he appreciates it in another way because he knows that I’m used to giving speeches, and I like it.

And finally, the MCU star was also quick to point out that their collaboration over the years managed to help him become a better actor. Through the sheer passion and love for the art of filmmaking that Tarantino has, Jackson believes he managed to learn a lot, not to mention becoming a staple name in Hollywood through Pulp Fiction.

Thus, it’s only natural for Samuel L. Jackson to always be ready to collaborate on Quentin Tarantino’s next big project.

How Django Unchained Popularised the Spaghetti Western Genre

One of the few ways that Django Unchained repopularised the Spaghetti Western Genre of films is through Tarantino’s deliberate choice of this filmmaking style for the project. And since these films were famous till the ’60s and ’70s in Europe, it proved to be the global audience’s first exposure to the genre.

At the same time, the filmmaker also made sure to fill the film with his signature visceral violence and gory imagery, which further shocked and excited the fans. And when it comes to his hallmark character-driven stories, the performances matched what the director was looking for.

And finally, it all culminated into a beautiful final product, which won the 2013 Academy Awards in Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay categories, further driving interest in the populace for the movie.
