After a not-that-long wait, Season 2 of Landman has finally made its way to the screens, with its first episode having premiered on Paramount+ on November 16, 2025. Finally, fans got to witness what role Sam Elliott plays in the show: The character of T.L., aka Billy Bob Thornton’s character Tommy Norris’s father.
In his first scene, Elliott’s character was shown sitting in a wheelchair outside an assisted living facility in Texas. Seated there, he watched the sun set in rapture, before one of the facility’s workers came to call him inside for dinner, before the sun had set. But T.L., of course, was up in arms before another employee, Hank, intervened.
Landman S2 Kicks Off on a Tear-Jerker Note for Sam Elliott

When Hank showed up, he came with some bad news. He told Elliott’s character that the facility had “got a call from memory care in Amarillo” that Dorothy had died. Explaining the situation to T.L., he said,
She took her afternoon nap, just didn’t wake up.
This news brought Elliott’s character to tears as he remarked on the pain of “dying a little bit every day.” He also recommended Hank to “find a way to die quick.” In response, Hank extended his condolences to him, adding, “She’s in a better place. I’m sure you’ll see her again.” But this comment brought a rather intriguing revelation from T.L., who said,
If I do, that means I’m in hell too.
In this scene, there was no clarification about Dorothy’s identity and connection to T.L. However, it was revealed in the episode’s final scene that she was actually Tommy’s mother when he told Angela (played by Ali Larter) that he had gotten a call about somebody who had died. When she asked who did, he replied,
My mother.
That marked a pretty tear-jerker, emotional debut for Elliott in Landman, who previously played the role of Shea Brennan in the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, and also teased about the future of this particular Taylor Sheridan show that he’s currently starring in. But how exactly his story as T.L. will continue to unfold from here remains to be seen.
