George R.R. Martin Is Not the Only One Who Hates Spider-Man’s Deal With Mephisto in ‘One More Day’

By Steven Johnson 11/15/2025

One of the most questioned storylines in Spider-Man’s universe is One More Day, which has widely been criticized, with even master fantasy writer George R.R. Martin joining the ranks of the scrutinizers. But he isn’t the only major celebrity to criticize it, for even Adam Driver’s character in Gayby didn’t hesitate to voice his disapproval of the respective storyline.

The fact it’s still universally hated even Adam Driver agreed pic.twitter.com/LAi43Nxg7U https://t.co/l49FlatiPx

In a recently resurfaced clip from the movie, Driver’s Neil in the film was seen candidly condemning the storyline. In fact, he even went as far as to say that he started sticking to the X-Men books, as at least they had more “build-up” there. Calling out the storyline pretty brutally, Driver candidly said (see @Jd14762’s tweet on X),

I stopped reading Spider-Man ever since he made that deal with the devil. I’m sticking to the X books. At least when Cyclops physically cheated with Emma Frost on Jean Grey, who we all know is the love of his life, at least there was a little buildup. It didn’t happen overnight. And they didn’t need the devil to magically swoop in and [ruin everything].

He was that disappointed by how the storyline turned out, with Spidey signing a deal with Mephisto to undo his marriage as a price for restoring Aunt May?! Well, numerous others have also called that plot twist pretty ridiculous, so we don’t entirely blame him. After all, even the mastermind behind Game of Thrones is critical of One More Day!

Spider-Man: One More Day Has Also Earned the Wrath of George R.R. Martin

As it turns out, even George R.R. Martin couldn’t deal with the absurd plot twist that One More Day brought along. While discussing his love for comic books with Popverse, he was pretty vocal about his criticism of the same, as he candidly revealed that there should be continuity because of all the things that the characters went through.

Martin said,

I don’t like retcons. I don’t like reboots. You know, I’m watching, I’m following a character or a superhero or something for years, sometimes decades, and then they come and say, ‘Oh, no. None of that stuff happened. We’re just going to start the whole thing over again. That always annoys the hell out of me.

He also expanded on how this soft-reboot for the web-slinger just wasn’t right, saying, “Peter Parker married Mary Jane. You can’t undo these things, but they do nowadays. But what can you do?” Well, there you go: Even one of the most outstanding brainboxes on the planet hates One More Day, so is there any more need to justify the criticism?

Even Fans Feel One More Day Was the “Worst Story” Spider-Man Ever Had

Over the years, fans have been super critical of the One More Day storyline, and that hate hasn’t stopped even now, years after the comic book originally came out. Now that this clip from Driver is making rounds on the internet, the topic has gained light once again, and fans are once again condemning the respective book and its storyline.

Taking to X, here’s what these fans have to say:

I’m not as in tune to the comics as I am other mediums of marvel but like is there a reason why this can’t just be undone or is Marvel just being stubborn about it? Like we do universe ending storylines every other year, but they can’t undo this deal with the devil?

Marvel will do anything except let Spiderman be happy

It was the worst story spiderman ever had

Even ignoring the MJ marriage erasure, "Spider-man made a deal with the Devil" is just an insane thing to be a core part of his character now.

Quesada killed of the Mutants, disbanded the Avengers and ruined Peter's character.

I stopped reading spiderman comic books after that storyline, and haven't read but short runs ever since,Quesada ruined spiderman for me

I stopped reading Spider-Man books because of it.

That story came out of nowhere. Still kept watching the Spidey movies and shows though.

Just dropped Marvel cold back then.

He needs to hang the people responsible for that story fr

To sum it up, it might as well be accepted that Spider-Man: One More Day will, perhaps, go down as one of the most hated and disapproved storylines of all time. After all, even Neil and George R.R. Martin don’t approve of it!
