By Paul Wilson 11/11/2025

After a film adaptation of the action-adventure video game God of War was cancelled, Amazon came through with the decision to turn it into a television series. Now, it looks like a popular name is being linked to the adaptation – Henry Cavill.

It’s no secret that Cavill is a huge gamer. He is already attached to Amazon’s Warhammer 40K project, and now, reports state that the Superman actor could be playing Kratos in God of War.

Nothing has been confirmed yet. Amazon and Sony haven’t cast anyone in the lead role, and fans would be better off taking Cavill’s reported casting with a pinch of salt until the news comes directly from those in charge.

Physically speaking, Cavill wouldn’t be an obvious choice, especially with fans vouching for the likes of Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, and even the video game’s original voice actor, Christopher Judge. However, there’s nothing a little transformation journey can’t fix!

Other Actors Reportedly in the Running for God of War

Cavill is a fan favorite choice when it comes to literally anything. And why wouldn’t he be? He embodies every character he takes on with effortless perfection. But, if reports are to be believed, Cavill may have some competition when it comes to playing Kratos.

As per insider John Campea, who has been reliable in the past with his leaks, there are ten actors that may reportedly be in the running for the role of Kratos.

He stated, “Recently, whispers have started to float around. I’ve heard a few. Bunch of people I know have heard a few.” However, he did clarify that in the ten names he’s listing, some are his personal choices, some are fan casts, while some are legitimate rumors.

The names are:

Campea also mentions Cavill in the list, but he does add that the actor might be a little young for the role. He said, “You could grey his hair a little bit. He’s definitely got the physique. He’s definitely got the acting.”

Everything We Know About Amazon’s Live-Action God of War

The live-action TV series was confirmed in 2022 during Sony Pictures’ investor meeting. As per ScreenRant, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that a God of War was in development and that it will be released on Amazon Prime Video.

Eventually, Ronald D. Moore, best known for his work on Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, was brought on to oversee the adaptation as writer, showrunner, and executive producer (via Deadline). He replaced the original creative team of Rafe Judkins (showrunner/executive producer), Hawk Ostby (executive producer), and Mark Fergus (executive producer).

During his appearance on The Sackhoff Show earlier this year, Moore confirmed that Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the series. He said,

Right now I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they have asked me to come in. I’m literally in the writers room and working on that. That’s my new thing […] And I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like, ‘Okay, I’ve never done this before.’

So far, none of the cast has been confirmed, and if history is any indication, there’s a long way to go before we get to crossing that bridge. Meanwhile, for those afraid of the adaptation straying away from the source material, Amazon Studios’ Head of Television Vernon Sanders reassured (via Collider) that the show will be “incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own.Click here to read more.
