Following the infamous assault at TwitchCon 2025, Twitch has addressed the issue and apologized to Emily Beth Schunk, popularly known as Emiru. The platform has admitted its failure to keep her safe and sound.

They said and quoted (via Dexerto),

We deeply regret the distress we caused for Emiru, our other creators, and the entire community.

Twitch has now made a move to support nonprofits working to prevent sexual violence, following the incident that took place in San Diego.

We wanted to follow up on the post we recently made about a security incident at TwitchCon San Diego. As many of you know, at the 2025 TwitchCon San Diego event, one of our valued creators, Emiru, was assaulted by an attendee during a meet-and-greet event.

Although Twitch works…

But unfortunately, it seems that fans and followers aren’t happy about this apology. They need a better explanation for the cause.

Twitch Faces Backlash Over Insincere Apology, Slammed as PR Stunt

As Twitch posted an official apology, fans couldn’t help but hit back with their reactions to the same.

You have criminal sexual assaulters freely streaming on twitch now, this is your own fault and no one takes you seriously.

How can we expect you to take assault seriously at your events if you can't even ban people who have committed assault four times on two separate people on your platform?

A few are even asking the platform to upgrade the reforms and policies regarding such incidents. If not done, the repercussions seem to be distrust of the platform.

I don’t think anyone’s going to trust or feel truly safe until there is a total reform that’s done right.

This does not fix anything.
What are you doing to actually fix this situation so it does not happen anymore?

If you want people to keep coming back to TC, you should provide us with information of what you are actually doing so it does not happen again.

As the story further unfolds, the platform now faces growing pressure to rebuild trust within its community. Fans and creators are demanding action that proves their statements.

From stronger safety protocols at events to providing adequate protection to streamers so that they can interact freely with their fans and audience, Twitch has a lot to take care of in the future. How the company comes up with meaningful reforms will ultimately determine how sincere the platform is in addressing such critical issues.

Tracing the Events That Led to the Emiru Assault Controversy

The heinous incident took place at TwitchCon San Diego 2025, during a meet-and-greet session where Emiru was assaulted by an attendee. The event quickly spread online, leaving fans and other creators enraged. Many questioned the security breach at one of Twitch’s biggest events.

Following this, the platform faced intense criticism for the same. Her supporters called out the platform, asking for stricter event protocols and accountability.

After growing backlash, Twitch has released a public apology, admitting its failure to protect the streamer and promising action. The company also announced plans to donate to nonprofits working to prevent sexual violence.

While some appreciated the move, others felt it wasn’t enough and needed real changes to make future events safer, and that’s where things stand as of writing. What are your thoughts on this? Comment down below.
