Jason Bourne Director Eyes Another Road House Sequel After Amazon Screwed Him Over

By George Martinez 10/30/2025

Doug Liman surprised the fans with the 2024 brawler, Road House. A modern remake of Patrick Swayze‘s 1989 film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, was the last thing anyone was expecting from the Jason Bourne director. However, the 2024 movie, replicating its predecessor’s legacy, also became somewhat of a niche cult classic – loved by fans, loathed by critics.

But, as with so many Hollywood productions, no movie can exist without some good behind-the-scenes drama. In that vein, Liman is now making another Road House movie after disavowing his original. Although this time, it’s not a remake or a reboot, but rather a sequel to the 1989 original.

Jason Bourne Director Disavows His Own Road House Movie for New Sequel

For Doug Liman, a theatrical experience counts just as much as any Hollywood director. The new pandemic-enforced system of direct-to-streaming releases simply violates Liman’s understanding of the cinematic world and its structure.

When Amazon announced the streaming release for Road House, Liman claimed he would boycott the movie’s premiere in protest. Apparently, the director felt betrayed by the studio’s failure to give his film its due theatrical honor. Even so, Road House was the biggest movie debut ever, with 50 million worldwide viewers in its first two weekends on Prime Video (Deadline).

A year later, instead of remaking something like Jason Bourne, Liman wants to focus on directing the sequel to the Patrick Swayze original, Road House: Dylan, which was penned by original writer R. Lance Hill. The only stipulation this time is that the movie has to receive a theatrical release.

Reason Behind Road House 2 Delay at Amazon MGM Studios

While many production difficulties marred the delay of Road House 2 at Amazon, one of the primary reasons behind it was Guy Ritchie’s exit from the project in July 2025. But now, Amazon MGM has already begun production on Road House 2, despite the internal fracturing with Doug Liman.

Road House 2 is now being helmed by director Ilya Naishuler, who is bringing Jake Gyllenhaal back in the ring alongside the brawny Dave Bautista, Aldis Hodge, and Leila George. For now, the plot details are being kept under wraps, with no announcement of the release date yet.
