During an appearance on the Zach Sang Show in April 2025, Joe Keery, known musically as Djo, opened up about how creating his latest album, The Crux, helped him rediscover his desire for love.
Talking about the track, Gap Tooth Smile from the record, Keery shared that working on the song made him want to be in a relationship again.
“Yeah, I think so. I think throughout the process of recording this record, it’s like it’s a great thing to have,” he admitted. However, he clarified that the song isn’t about anyone specific from his life.
It’s just kind of like… I kind of just put myself in the place of like, you know, I’ve had like a partner that I really care about before, and like a song that’s just like from the perspective of a person looking at their partner and being like, “Oh my god, wow, I am so lucky.”
“You’re talking about kind of like a place of gratitude, and I love that that song is about that,” he added. The actor also shared how experiences from the past relationship, personal growth, and self-understanding were essential steps before opening himself up to love again.
