Nelly Furtado has bid farewell (via IG) to the realm of music after an incredible run that spanned over two decades. Having sold over 45 million records, Furtado cemented herself as one of the most influential Canadian musicians.
In addition to her musical genius, she inspired millions through her adherence to self-love despite being subjected to body-shaming comments. She never allowed the body-shaming trolls to get under her skin, as even during her recent live performances, the singer didn’t shy away from taking lighthearted jabs at her detractors.

Her retirement hasn’t stemmed from her detractors’ bigotry. Instead, the Promiscuous singer opted to step away from music to focus on other aspects of life. While she remains grateful for her career that continues to dominate the new generation, Furtado expressed that she’s ready to move on.
Moving forward, the singer is ready to focus on other creative endeavors in her life. Considering she started penning songs as a hobby, Furtado deemed herself lucky for having been able to translate this into a full-blown career, stressing that she’ll always identify herself as a songwriter.
All this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life. I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’m grateful for all the years of fun, community and wonder.
Even though we won’t be getting more new releases from the iconic artist, her decades-long discography will continue to rock millions.
When Nelly Furtado Stood Tall Against Body-Shaming Trolls
Now, returning to the trolls with nothing better to do, Furtado refrained from giving them any spotlight, at least not directly. Given how big an inspiration she has been for celebrating body positivity, in response to the body-shaming trolls, Furtado took the Manchester Pride stage in an oversized t-shirt featuring a cartoon hourglass body (via IG).
Even though the intent behind it remains open to interpretation, it’s safe to say the singer’s fashion statement was taking a dig at trolls, who criticized the singer over her weight.
The cartoon imagery in question involved a headless woman wearing a black bra and a mini skirt, with a belt that read “Whoa Nelly”. The intent seems to be taking a jab at some factions’ narrow and unnatural expectations that totally undermine natural beauty.
