5 Greatest CBM Directors Ranked in Both MCU and DCU

By Chris Davis 10/25/2025

Over the years, the film industry has been blessed with a handful of absolute geniuses when it comes to bringing a comic book to life on the big screen. Be it James Gunn’s signature humor or Christopher Nolan’s unbeatable filmmaking style, it’s basically impossible to pick one filmmaker out of the lot and put them on the podium.

The world of comic book movies may seem like all fun and games, but the sheer dedication and intricate planning that goes into making them is something not everyone can achieve.

Let’s take a look at five CBM directors who have redefined the genre, leaving a lasting impression on pop culture. (PSA: Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion!)

5. Zack Snyder

MOVIES: 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Zack Snyder may not be everyone’s favorite, and you may even wonder if he belongs on the list of the top 5 CBM directors. However, no matter what you think of his work, you can’t deny that Snyder is an absolute visionary. His films may or may not knock it out of the park each time, but you know they are going to leave you with your jaw dropped, thanks to their dark nature.

Critics may be polarized when it comes to Snyder’s work, but there is a reason why he has built himself a loyal fan base. His films are known for their ambitious scale, thematic depth, and striking visuals, solidifying him as one of the greatest CBM directors ever, at least on this list.

4. Russo Brothers

MOVIES: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Joe and Anthony Russo have taken the Marvel Cinematic Universe to unimaginable heights with their ambitious and complex plots, large-scale action, and their ability to handle ensemble casts effortlessly.

Sure, they haven’t always made the right decisions (we are looking at you, Smart Hulk), but you cannot deny the goosebumps you feel every time you are sitting in the theaters watching a Russo Brothers film.

With films like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers have established themselves as the architects of the modern MCU. All in all, not every decision they make may get them applause, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons!

The Russo Brothers have returned to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

3. Sam Raimi

MOVIES: The Spider-Man Trilogy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Even today, Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man is regarded as one of the best iterations of the friendly neighborhood superhero, if not the best. While Spider-Man 3 may have left the fans and critics feeling a bit divided, Bully Maguire was a treat in itself.

Sam Raimi’s trilogy may seem old-fashioned and simple compared to the grandeur we have grown accustomed to, but trust me, that’s what makes it all the more enjoyable. Not to mention the film did give us this fan-favorite moment:

Sam Raimi has also directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, officially dipping his toes into the MCU. It may not be the best MCU film out there, but the fight scenes and emotions were off the charts, making Raimi the perfect addition to this list. Honestly, I’d rank him higher if I could!

2. Christopher Nolan

MOVIES: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises.

To be honest, Christopher Nolan deserves the top spot on any list he shows up in, by default. However, given the fact that he is more known for his reality-bending, larger-than-life projects, rather than comic book movies, spot number 2 seems good enough.

Despite only having a single trilogy to his name, Nolan managed to make something that will probably go down in history as some of the best works in the genre. From Christian Bale‘s Batman to Heath Ledger‘s iconic portrayal of Joker, Nolan didn’t need multiple stories to prove that he can bring comic books to life better than anyone else around him.

Fun fact: Did you know that Nolan was also a producer on Snyder’s Man of Steel?

While he may be putting all his focus towards epic films like Oppenheimer and the upcoming The Odyssey, the Dark Knight trilogy will always ensure he has a spot on my list.

1. James Gunn

MOVIES: Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, and Superman.

Say what you may of the man, but James Gunn never misses, and that’s a fact. Take a look at any discussion on the Internet, and the fans will let you know exactly why Gunn is the GOAT when it comes to comic book movies.

Whether it’s Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad, Gunn has proven time and time again what happens when a comic-loving kid grows up to turn his hobby into a profession. Attending Comic-Con, the visionary filmmaker revealed exactly why he got into this business (via Geek Tyrant):

People have been asking me a lot, why did I take this job? I knew that there was going to be a lot of hitches, a lot of problems, but as many of you know, comic books are in my blood. These characters are in my blood. I was sort of an oddball child who didn’t really have many friends and loved comic books. Loved DC comic books, loved Marvel comic books.

Honestly? It shows in his work.

People were initially skeptical about where Gunn would take the DCU when his reboot was first announced. However, with Superman, he basically proved everyone wrong, turning his haters into begrudging fans.

Greatest CBM Directors Honorable Mention: Ryan Coogler

MOVIES: Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Ryan Coogler may not be a name you usually hear in such discussions, but you honestly should. The man gave us one perfect and one nearly-perfect comic book movie, both of which touched our hearts in more ways than one.

When Black Panther was first announced, it became a global phenomenon. The movie remains a splendid example of representation done right, and the numbers speak for themselves. It is also the only Marvel film EVER to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Clearly, Coogler did something right.

Moreover, Wakanda Forever did absolute justice to Chadwick Boseman‘s legacy, and while you may not agree with Shuri taking over the mantle, T’Challa wouldn’t have had it any other way.
