Johnny Depp’s Next Movie Can Break His Embarassing Box Office Streak Since Amber Heard Trial

By Robert Moore 10/24/2025

Johnny Depp is looking to end his embarrassing streak at the box office, and this new Christmas film with Ti West sounds like the perfect opportunity. Deadline reported that Depp and West are collaborating on an adaptation of A Christmas Carol. It is being reported that Skydance-owned Paramount is in final negotiations for the project, titled Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.

The Charles Dickens story is also being adapted into another film project, helmed by Robert Eggers and starring Willem Dafoe. Actress Andrea Riseborough has also signed on for Ti West’s adaptation. Nathaniel Halpern is writing the script, and Emma Watts is producing. The film is expected to be released on November 13, 2026.

Depp looks to end his losing streak at the box office with this film. His last hit film was the 2018 movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He has appeared in very few projects since then, especially due to his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.

His projects, including The Professor, City of Lies, Waiting for the Barbarians, Minamata, and the French film Jeanne du Barry, were all major disasters or went unnoticed at the box office. His directorial venture, Modì, received critical acclaim, but didn’t make much impact at the box office.

Fans Are Excited About Johnny Depp’s New Christmas Movie

Fans are excited about this collaboration between Ti West and Johnny Depp. According to Deadline, the movie is “a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London,” which follows the supernatural journey of Depp’s protagonist to “face his past, present and future and fight for a second chance.”

Fans believe that the role of Ebenezer Scrooge is a perfect fit for Depp, who played such eccentric characters in the past. What’s more exciting for fans is West’s involvement. The director is known for his indie horror flicks, including V/H/S, The ABCs of Death, In a Valley of Violence, and Mia Goth’s X film series.

Fans shared their excitement on X, with some calling Depp’s casting “perfect.” They believed that Depp would deliver his most unhinged performance as Scrooge in the movie. They also believed that this version of the movie would outperform Robert Eggers’ upcoming movie. Some of the fan comments read:

TI WEST!? Can't wait to see all the violence! Ghost of Christmas Future is about to be on par or better than the one from Scrooged!

Perfect casting, I heard he hates Christmas

Johnny Depp as Scrooge? Oh that’s gonna be unhinged in the best way. Dude’s about to turn “Bah, humbug” into a full-blown gothic monologue. Ti West directing means it’s not a Christmas movie, it’s a psychological Christmas horror.

W for Johnny Depp! This will probably be my favorite one of the Scrooge movies no doubt!

I guess this beats the one that Robert Egger’s would make starring Willem Dafoe

I can already imagine this being quite perfect..

Can they bring it a year forward?

The role in the Paramount-led project marks one of Depp’s first major studio projects since his defamation lawsuit. It is a tell-tale sign that the industry has begun welcoming the actor back into mainstream cinema.

Johnny Depp’s Upcoming Projects After Legal Battle With Amber Heard

Johnny Depp’s return to cinema after the Depp v Heard trial was through his directorial venture, Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness. It was his second film as a director and starred Riccardo Scamarcio as Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. The film was released in theaters in Italy last November.

Depp is currently set to reunite with Penelope Cruz in the upcoming film, Day Drinker. He is also filming Carnival: At the End of Days, opposite Adam Driver, Jeff Bridges, and Jason Momoa.

During a recent interview with EW, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared a positive update about Depp’s possible return in the sixth Pirates movie. He shared that he had spoken to Depp about a potential comeback. He shared, “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know.”

Depp recently reflected on the legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, during an interview with The Times U.K.. He claimed that he was a “crash test dummy for #MeToo.” Further addressing his comeback, he shared that he didn’t go anywhere. He shared, “My comeback? Honestly? I didn’t go anywhere. If I had the chance to split I would never come back.”

He shared that he did not regret anything about his much-publicized trial with Heard. He shared, “Look, none of this was going to be easy, but I didn’t care. I thought, ‘I’ll fight until the bitter f**king end.’ And if I end up pumping gas? That’s all right. I’ve done that before.” While some expect the actor to thrive in this comeback, others still believe that his career is over.
