Nicole Kidman‘s divorce from Keith Urban has allegedly taken a toll on her, but it was nothing like the time when she and Tom Cruise parted ways after a decade of marriage. Cruise blindsided her at a time when she was at the peak of her career. Interestingly, one of her alleged photos from that time went crazy on the internet, speaking volumes about the tumultuous divorce proceedings.
In the viral photo, she was seen in a pink sheer top and light green trousers. She was yelling happily in the street, and paparazzi claimed that it was a photo taken after Kidman left a lawyer’s office after divorcing Cruise. In the following years, it went on to become a major meme, and many female fans of the actress recreated the viral photo during their divorce.
As recent as 2021, The Independent reported that a woman from California went viral on the internet after she recreated Kidman’s famous divorce photo. However, the photo, which is often associated with the ‘independent woman’, allegedly had nothing to do with the Babygirl actress or her divorce.
Nicole Kidman Revealed the Truth Behind Her Viral Divorce Photo
Nicole Kidman clarified that the infamous divorce photo was not even real during her interview with British GQ last year. She shared that the photos were from a movie that she was filming at the time. She told the outlet, “That was not me; that was from a film, that wasn’t real life. I know that image!”
Kidman also explained another meme about her, where she was seen clapping weirdly during the Oscars 2017. She shared:
I’ve also seen the one where I’m clapping like that. ’Cause I had a massive heavy borrowed ring on and it was really painful, and I was scared of wrecking the jewellery. Ha! There’s always something behind the actual images that go out there, right?
Neither Kidman nor the fans know where the rumors about the divorce photo originated. Interestingly, Kidman also didn’t explain which movie the photos are from. Fans haven’t seen any movie with this particular costume or pose in it.
Nicole Kidman Was At the Peak of Her Career During Her Divorce From Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s love blossomed on the sets of Days of Thunder, and the couple swiftly got married in 1990. It was a high-profile relationship that couldn’t escape the paparazzi at all. They adopted two children, born in 1992 and 1995. However, the relationship didn’t work out, and they called it quits in 2001.
Interestingly, Kidman’s career was at an all-time high at this time. Kidman went on to win the Best Actress Oscar in 2003 for playing the role of Virginia Woolf in The Hours. One of her major challenges during the shoot of the movie was her emotional vulnerability due to her divorce. The director of the film, Stephen Daldry, told GQ:
So she was especially vulnerable, she was especially emotionally available, and went on a real journey with me. I think one of the ways that she survived that process was to submerge herself into the world of Virginia Woolf and become obsessive about the work. I think it was a way to blank out the emotional trauma in her private life, investing all of that energy and all of that hurt into the role.
She revealed in Dave Krager’s book 50 Oscar Nights that she was devastated after receiving the award, as she had finalized her divorce from Cruise the same year. She shared, “I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well” (via InStyle).
Kidman shared that she was in no mood to attend Vanity Fair’s Oscar afterparty at the time, but she was convinced by everyone to go. When she attended the party, Kidman shared that she was overwhelmed by the celebrations, especially considering her sad circumstances. She shared:
So I literally walked in, carried it around, was completely overwhelmed, emotional, shaking, and I didn’t enjoy it. I was almost apologetic, which is so stupid. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.
Kidman further shared that she went home and ordered takeout, spending her time with her family in the Beverly Hills Hotel. It was reported that Cruise left because Kidman refused to join the Church of Scientology. However, Kidman never commented on this report.
