Fact Check: Is James Gunn Planning a Keanu Reeves Starring Constantine Series?

By Chris Davis 10/22/2025

No, James Gunn is not planning a Constantine series starring Keanu Reeves. But as the DC helmer and filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with BobaTalks, he has instead talked to Reeves about a possible Constantine sequel.

I’ve discussed it on and off. I’ve discussed it with Keanu. That’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented. But I have not read any script yet.

A sequel to the 2005 movie has been in the news for a long time, and despite fan demand, we have yet to get a hopeful update. But if Gunn has talked about the sequel, it seems we might finally be getting closer to the film, which has supposedly been in the plans for years.

Keanu Reeves Wasn’t Happy With the First Draft of the Sequel

Keanu Reeves has shown interest in portraying John Constantine for a long time, and even recently remarked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he is aching to play the character again.

However, as Peter Stormare, who portrayed Lucifer in the original film, revealed in an interview with The Direct, it is Reeves who is not very happy with the scripts.

[There’s] a lot of back and forth, because… I think Keanu [Reeves] is not so happy with the scripts

A potential sequel has been in the works since 2022, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told ComicBook.com in 2024 that a script had already been written.

However, since then, there hasn’t been any positive update apart from a few remarks here and there. While the reason for the delay has not been given by any sources, Stormare revealed that Reeves reportedly wants the sequel to be as close to the original one, which might be one of the reasons why it has been delayed.

Based on the DC Comics, the 2005 film featured Reeves as John Constantine, a cynical exorcist with a one-way ticket to hell, helping a policewoman investigate the death of her twin sister.

Our Take On a Potential Constantine Sequel

As we mentioned, the Constantine sequel has long been desired by fans, and it was in 2022 that it was first reported to be in the works. However, since then, there has been a lack of positive updates, hinting that the sequel might turn out to be a failure.

Every few years, the same headlines resurface about the sequel being in the works, but the truth is that the studio doesn’t seem to have figured out what it wants the sequel to be. This uncertainty has already cost it momentum, as the longer the project lingers in limbo, the more likely fans are to lose interest.

The original film is a cult classic, and a mediocre script or a misguided attempt to “modernize” it could completely tarnish the film’s legacy, turning what was once a niche gem into another soulless IP revival.

However, that said, James Gunn’s potential involvement could change everything. If he ends up stepping in as a creative producer, there is a chance that this project may give the original a second life, or even expand it into a larger supernatural corner of the DC universe.

But until Keanu Reeves signs on or James Gunn takes a lead, the sequel remains a hopeful rumor rather than a real resurrection. For now, you can only wait, pray, and perhaps, light a cigarette for John Constantine’s long-delayed return.
