Trans Model Alex Consani’s Struggle: Did She Really Transition at 4 Years Old?

Alex Consani walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show after becoming one of the first transgender models to walk the VS runway last year alongside Valentina Sampaio. When she started her modeling career in 2015, she was the youngest transgender model at the age of 12. She blew up on TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic with her comedy sketches and amassed millions of followers.

Consani is of Italian, English, and German descent and was born in Petaluma, California. She started wearing feminine clothing at the age of four. By eight, she decided that she wanted to go by the name Alex. When she hit puberty, the model underwent hormone replacement therapy to transition into a girl.

She made her runway debut in 2021 for Tom Ford. Over the years, she walked in runways for Versace, Alexander McQueen, Boss by Hugo Boss, Burberry, Chloé, Roberto Cavalli, and Coperni.

In 2024, she also won the Fashion Award for Model of the Year, becoming the first transgender model to win that award. Consani also appeared in JT’s music video for Okay and Charli XCX’s music video for 360.

Alex Consani Condemned the Attack Against Trans Kids

During her feature in Harper’s Bazaar‘s April issue, Alex Consani spoke out against people targeting members of the trans community. She pointed out how hospitals were increasingly canceling appointments for gender-affirming care for trans kids after Donald Trump’s presidency began.

Trump issued an executive order banning access to gender-affirming care for trans minors. She shared that it was scary to see people targeting her community and the helpless kids. She shared:

It’s scary to see the most politically powerful and the most wealthy people in the world directly targeting my community specifically and mostly targeting the kids that are helpless to any of this.

She further shared that she “likes to be in the streets” to “do as much as I can.” She shared, “I speak publicly about what I believe in, and that makes me hopeful.” Consani added:

Sometimes it can get you wrapped up in the negativity when that’s never been what our community is about. It’s always been positive. … Even in the face of such negative policies, we’re able to recognize that us as a community can’t be affected. We’re never going to go away. We’re never going to go away.

She also shared that she would use her social media platform to help her community. She was featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar alongside fellow models Paloma Elsesser and Anok Yai.

Alex Consani’s Advocacy Started from a Young Age

Right about the time when she started her modeling, Alex Consani shared that she wanted a future where models didn’t need to be male or female. She shared in an interview with Nerdwire, “I’d like to accomplish a goal where models don’t need to be female or models don’t need to be male, they can be whatever gender they want and also anyone can be beautiful.”

When she and Valentina Sampaio became the first transgender models to walk the runway for VS, she revealed that it was a “really impactful moment” for her. However, she shared her disappointment at how the modeling world has yet to be an all-inclusive field. She shared (via Teen Vogue):

I don’t see the people who I’m inspired by doing the same jobs I’m doing or getting the same support. It’s upsetting. Where are the dolls of color? Where’s the South Asian models? The Native American / Indigenous models? I’m close to people in those communities, and it’s really changed my perception of fashion.

Consani thanked the contribution of Black trans women who “fought for the space” she was in after winning the Fashion Model of the Year (via Yahoo!). She named a few models like Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, and Aaron Rose Phillips, sharing that they “fought for the space that allowed me to flourish today.”

In her speech, she thanked the parents who continue to support their trans kids. She also encouraged other parents of transgender kids to continue supporting them as well.
